Is self-diagnosis a healthy habit?

self-diagnosis

Earlier, we had a cough or cold, we would visit a doc or take a tablet we have been prescribed previously. These days, a minor fever and we are all googling the symptoms to know what it could be. Everyone has become a doctor. Everyone has started self-diagnosis. The information explosion online is more or less responsible for this behavior.

I am sure it irks the doctors that their patients are well able to conduct self-diagnosis and talk knowledgeably. Do not get me wrong. It is good to be aware of your body and your need to understand it. But, may be, somewhere down the line, the information is making us more self-reliant and less trusting of our doctors. Saves us from bad ones but when we actually need treatment, it might end up harming us. It would do us good to remember that not all that information is right and pertinent.

Let me just recount instances when I have obsessively self-diagnosed myself.

  1. Irrationally, I have always been convinced that I have PCOS/PCOD all because of the facial hair. I did visit a gyneac for this!!
  2. Again at some point of time, I started taking too many fluids and visiting the washroom too many times. My mum was staying with me at that time so she asked me if I have developed diabetes. I suddenly became so conscious that I reduced the intake of fluids!! And, started to search for other symptoms of diabetes.
  3. I have done this multiple number of times like when I wanted to find out whether rheumatoid arthritis was genetic or when retina detachment was diagnosed in my eyes.

Thankfully, either of the time I did not really land up with the doctor but it is a serious habit which can have long term implications if it becomes an obsession.

How much sunscreen should you use?

sunscreen, beauty products, how much sunscreen should you use

It has been so long that I have myself followed applying sunscreen rule that I could not justify a post on it. Since almost two months though, I have been consistent and seeing the results. One of the major grouches with using sunscreen for me has always been determining how much sunscreen should you use.

What you are applying – is it too little, is it too much, it is getting greasy, it is sticking out on the skin, making a whitish cast on the skin. There are just too many problems with applying sunscreen and that is when I am not even mentioning reapplication.

How much Sunscreen should you use?

Two Finger Rule

A long time back, like 5 years, I read somewhere that you must use the two finger rule to determine how much sunscreen should you use. According to this, you are supposed to apply two finger length of sunscreen on each part of your body. And, that it is a whole lot of product and, just like every other rule, the amount of sunscreen you get is determined by the texture of the product. Impossible!

Tip No. 1 – Apply sunscreen in Layers and Dots

I like to apply my sunscreen in layers and dots. First, I dot the sunscreen at the eyes and around the face and neck and decolletage. Blend. Repeat. Blend. Repeat till I am sure the sunscreen is evenly blended. Special attention to hair line, nose crevices and jaw lines. I also tend to use different sunscreens for face and body which saves money as well as a lot of hassle.

Beauty Products I am Disappointed With

face wash is causing breakouts, beauty products

Do you not hate when you buy beauty products and they do not do what is expected of them? It hurts worse when they are so expensive! These are a few beauty products I have been using for the past few months, both expensive and inexpensive, which sucked for me, literally. So, lets start.

Forest Essentials Facial Cleanser Mashobra Honey, Lemon & Rosewater

Price : Rs 1,075 for 200ml

I have already reviewed this product but that was way before my skin care troubles. And, that is when I realized the face wash was not really cleaning my skin properly.

So, yes, it is a bad face wash for evening and clogs the pores. I would say avoid all the face washes from natural brands. Seems like a universal problem.

Neutrogena Extra Gentle Cleanser

Price : Rs 499 for 200ml

Similar to the above face wash, this product was too gentle for a deep cleansing routine. So, again a huge disappointment from a brand which usually does not fail.

Vichy Purete Thermale Micellar Water

Price : Rs 990 for 200ml
