What do You Do for Yourself Everyday?

Swathy · April 3, 2025 · Leave a Comment

dog sniffing flowers, therapy, mental health

A Therapist posed this question to me. Two years back when I sought out for an emergency session with a crazy expensive celebrity counsellor on an impulse. While I had been itching to run away, my desperation kept me glued to the sofa as I waited for her.

As she asked me the question, I was stumped and flabbergasted.

I listed down my routine. I am great at doing what is required. But, none of them included anything for myself. Essentially, I was in the survival mode doing things to keep the days turning.

In hindsight, it was this question which changed everything for me. This was the start.

I realized my bucket list was untouched even though I had reached my mid-life crisis. One day, I woke up to the realization of how I was waiting for weekends desperately and passing by the working days, to the extent of not having a life on the weekdays.

In order to change that, I started to look for activities and challenges I could easily accommodate in my daily life. Thereafter, I went on heritage or nature walks, joined a book club, got over my fear of driving, took a starter course in playing piano and read a lot of new genres I would never have bothered.

I still have bad days and still do not have a system to combat them. But, I know when to push on and when its time to regroup. I am still trying to figure out things, still feel hopeless and spend days and months being disillusioned and depressed.

It started small and then I came across an interesting experiment somewhere. The idea was to divide the entire year into quarters and devote each quarter for a skill or a hobby. I decided to try it out and I wrapped up the first quarter successfully. The hobby for the second is planned and good to go.

But, then what’s life without curveballs. A big change is incoming so I don’t know if my hobby would survive the test of the hour or I might just have to cook up a new one!!

The Evil Eye is Real.

Just the other day, a thought popped into my head — “Life is good lately. No problems.”

And, voila, the next day hell broke lose. I fucked up at work big time and spent two anxious days trying to berate myself.

And, realized, instead of berating and wallowing in self-pity, I would be of better use if I apply myself to the solution. Hopefully, the situation can be handled. I am optimistic.

But, the realization that I missed looking at the bigger picture while lost in my useless daily contemplations was a serious and a much needed wakeup call.

In retrospect, life was never problem free. I was complacent to my own detriment. If I was living a practical life, I would be drowning in tasks to finish before the impending change I am hell bent on avoiding. As usual, I am pushing what is required to the last possible moment.

We love to live the life of complacency while the storm builds up, gathering force and speed, ready to hit and tear you down. Humans have a crazy power to shove things under the carpet, rug or blanket, take your pick, till it suits them and makes life easy. Change is scary.

The fascinating fact is our Brains have a lot of say in fighting our default behavior. Brains are wired in a certain thought pattern based on our experiences and we become comfortable with the general rhythm of life.

Now, if you want to fight the existing system which your brain has honed for you, you need to fight your own survival instinct. And, to do that you need a lot of energy. Yes, actual calories.

As I said, Change is Hard. The least I can do is binge eat into emotional coma while my brain gets scrambled again!!

This winter has been uncomfortably cold for Hyderabad. Interestingly, prior to the cold was the season of allergy when almost everyone was or still is suffering from cold and cough and flu and what not. Changing seasons are hard on the body, especially when your immune system is not at its best. But, did you know that your house is making you sick?

The dust mites, mold, cockroaches and pollens could be the foremost reasons for your headaches, congestion, sinus and even mental health. The interesting part is that these culprits continue staying in your house making you sick long after the allergy season is over. The situation can worsen to trigger allergic asthma.

Usually, in these situations there is not much you can really do except trying to eliminate the dust mites, mold and pollen from your house as much as possible or prevent their entry. Beware that these miscreants can enter your house along with you, your clothes, footwear and even the windows.

6 Ways Your House is Making You Sick

Letting the Dust Accumulate

Let me start with describing my own home. We get a lot of dust owing to the fact that the area is undergoing lot of construction and the main road traffic. And, yours truly has lately been guilty of not dusting regularly which leads to a good amount of dust accumulation.

Always start dusting with a wet cloth to avoid moving the dust or spreading it into the air.
