Why switching to an Ayurvedic Hair Oil is a good choice for you?

Thanks to the new age ayurveda and holistic living practices, we are going back to our roots, quite literally. Although ayurveda and sustainable way of living is making a comeback, hair oiling practice was probably the only habit which had never become completely obsolete. How we had evolved from using vegetable oils in the 1970’s to embracing the ubiquitous Parachute coconut oil is a very interesting case study in marketing.

In fact, many of us have stood in the kitchens creating our own concoction of herbal oils with all the goodness available in our kitchens.

With all the pollution (thankfully the exposure has significantly reduced since the start of the pandemic ), nutrition and lifestyle changes, hair care is one of the biggest concerns of the day. To beat them all, we have been reintroduced to the world of ayurvedic hair oils incorporated with the magic of all the herbs, some rare and some not so rare, but all meant to restore your locks to their former glory.

Ultimately, a question arises – Do Hair Oils deliver what all they promise?

To answer that question, we should realize that when we talk about hair care, hair oiling is just one of the supplementary or topical measures we take to protect the hair. The ultimate nutrition for the hair follicles comes from the quality of food we intake which decides how your hair will behave. If you would really like to experiment, try to eat a balanced food for just a week and you will see the difference. It will not be significant but you will definitely notice it.

When it comes to hair care, the basic rule of thumb is to stay with a treatment or a practice for at least 6 months before you decide to switch. In 6 months, you would have grown 3 inches ( ½ inch per month on average ) of new hair which can show you some difference. If you are going to try any treatment or product for less than 6 months, it is very likely that you might not notice any difference in the new growth.

So, let’s see what can your Ayurvedic Hair Oil do for you?

Moisturize your Scalp

Yes, your ayurvedic hair oil, store-bought or made at home, can definitely moisturize your scalp health. The oil has emollients and fats which can help replace the lost lipids on your scalp. This loss can occur due to regular hair wash or due to excess heat or chemical treatments done on hair. It is the same as applying oil to your body to moisturize it. Oiling can take care of dry flaky scalp.

Using the right kind of oil is key. Did you know that using pure coconut oil alone can be drying for both your skin and scalp. Usually that is why a blend is always preferred when it comes to oils, to counteract the different properties of different kinds of oils.

May Help in Reducing Dandruff or Scalp Related Issues

Dandruff can occur due to numerous reasons. If the cause is dry flaky scalp, yes, your hair oil can help but only to a certain extent. If the reason for dandruff is excess oil on the scalp, skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis or hormonal imbalances, your hair oil will not do anything for you. Scalp and Hair health is usually an indication of your overall body health and it is always a good idea to get a doctor’s opinion if you see any irregularity.

Cleaning Your Scalp

Sounds counterintuitive but oiling the scalp to clean is just similar to the oil cleansing method to cleanse your face. Oil cleansing can get rid of the oil or product build up on hair and scalp. You can also use this method to exfoliate your scalp. There are specific oils meant for cleansing purposes. The most preferred is a blend of coconut and castor oil in the ratio of 60-40 or 80-20 as they have cleansing properties.

3 Ayurvedic and Regular Hair Oils I Have Tried This Year

Mother Sparsh 30 Herbs Oil

As the name suggests, Mother Sparsh 30 Herbs Oil is a blend of 30 herbs including bhringraj, brahmi, amla, hibiscus, curry leaves, shikakai, indigo, turmeric, aloevera, black pepper, rose, camphor oil and neem oil. Neem, camphor, turmeric and black pepper are all antibacterial and anti-fungal in nature and help take care of scalp health by preventing any infections.

I remember that long ago when my hair started falling out, my mother’s first go to oil was a Bhringraj ayurvedic oil. And, then when I started some DIY’s, I ended up making an oil in the base of coconut and almond and added in black pepper, curry leaves, onion and a few other things. Now that we have a blend of all 30 herbs in Mother Sparsh, we need not resort to such DIY’s or single herb based oils.

The oil should be applied at least once a week. The smell of the oil is definitely ayurvedic and strong and texture is a little thick so it applies very easily on the hair and coats the strands well. Keeping it overnight is okay but I have personally realized whether you keep the hair oil for one hour or overnight, the oil delivers the nutrients to your hair follicles in an optimum time and stimulates blood flow.

If you are on the look out for a hair oil which can help with your hair loss or help promote hair growth, you can definitely try this product. The best part is this oil has black pepper and camphor which are extremely helpful in arresting the itchy scalp issue which may lead to hair fall and the spices are also helpful to stimulate new hair growth.

Kama Ayurveda Brigandi Intense Hair Treatment

This is the most luxurious ayurvedic hair oil I have used till date and I would recommend this to each and every one. I love using this hair oil and the texture is just so creamy and it really leaves the hair shiny and feeling luxuriously soft after the wash.

Hamdard Rogan Badam Shirin

Though this is not an ayurvedic hair oil, it is a unani medicine and I absolutely love this almond oil and would recommend it to one and all. It works for everything from hair care to nasal and ear care. Again, easily available in all medical stores, not very inexpensive but definitely something to try out. Since this is a plain oil, you can DIY with all the herbs on hand in your kitchen.

Now that you know how an ayurvedic hair oil can help your hair and scalp, you can inculcate hair oiling with an ayurvedic hair oil in your regular routine. And, do not forget, what you eat is what you get and this is especially true in terms of hair. Intake of balanced nutrition and regular exercise to increase blood circulation will help you achieve those lustrous locks you always envy on others.
