9+1 Steps to Glowing Skin

glowing skin

Updated from 29th April, 2015. I have never personally believed in striving for fair skin. In fact, I am wheatish to brown in skin tone and I love my skin. I like to keep it glowing and thus my fetish for using different products. So, here is my take on the popular 10-step Korean skin care routine for glowing skin.

Since quite long, I have been seeing a trend of questions from people who are either getting married or who have darker skin tones. They always want to know how to lighten their complexion or becomes fairer. So, first of all, I would like to say that you can’t really lighten the skin complexion. The skin color is determined by the amount of melanin your skin has and you can’t do anything to reduce the amount of this pigment inside your skin.

What you can instead do is focus on getting glowing skin and making sure your skin is not getting tanned or getting prone to hyperpigmentation which turns the skin darker than its original skin tone. So, the steps in your skin care routine should include protect and repair segments of products. Protection usually includes using sunscreen on a regular basis diligently and repair involves a plethora of other steps which I shall be discussing here.

Please note that the following skin care routine can also be termed as the new age skin care. I have tried to include everything I know here.

Protection Routine

Glowing Skin Step #1 – Vitamin C Serum

Contrary to usual belief, Vitamin C serums increase the strength of your sunscreen and do not make your skin photo toxic. It is only citrus fruits which make your skin so.

I use Kiehl’s vitamin C serum as my first step of day time skin care. Make sure your skin is completely dry before applying the vitamin C serum as vitamin C gets neutralized on contact with water. Whatever serum you may use, I would definitely suggest including vitamin C as part of your day care routine as it increases the strength of the sunscreen and gives the skin necessary antioxidants to counter the damage done by the rays.

Glowing Skin Step #2 – Use Sunscreen Diligently

No matter what, no matter the weather, your first rule is to use sunscreen. I would suggest Neutrogena Ultra Sheer but my favourite is MVO Moisturizing Face Screen. I have also tried out other sunscreens and loved Shiseido the best. Currently, I am not using any sunscreen which is something I would not suggest anyone to do. Please do your skin a favor and get a good sunscreen.

Use a nickel size of product for your face and another nickel size for your neck.Using the right amount of sunscreen is extremely important for proper protection.

I have often heard complains that the sunscreen does nothing but the secret lies in using the proper amount of sunscreen to provide full protection. You have to use a nickel size of product for your face and another nickel size for your neck. It might sound too much but unless you are using this much amount of sunscreen, you are not really protecting your skin.

Also remember that other products you are using in conjunction in your day care routine may interfere with the sunscreen. For example, avoid using facial oil in the morning as the oils can dissolve your sunscreen formulas. Instead, stick to serums.

Or, better yet, use a hyaluronic acid serum for hydration followed by a vitamin C serum followed by your sunscreen. The day care routine goes some what like this after your shower – serum, moisturizer, sunscreen, makeup.

Glowing Skin Step #3 – Reapplication of Sunscreen

Not a step per se, but you must be aware that any sunscreen lasts only two hours on our face. The sebum on our skin dissolves the sunscreen and renders it ineffective. So to avoid getting affected by sun rays later in the day, follow up with mineral sunscreen which can be applied on the makeup. Like, using a compact with higher spf. Avoid going out in the sun at noon unless absolutely unavoidable. And, use sunscreen even when you are indoor.

Repair Routine

Glowing Skin Step #4 – Relief from Sun Exposure

Are you aware that sun rays can continue affecting your skin even after you have gone inside for almost 30-45 minutes.

If you can not avoid roaming in the sun, do your skin a favor and give it some TLC right after getting back home. This step is for those days you have been out in sun in the noon time. Wash your face and apply a thick layer of aloevera gel, preferably chilled. This will soothe your skin and not let the sun rays continue their after-effects.ย  Or, you could choose a hydrating mask. This also helps to get rid of tanning.

Glowing Skin Step #5 – Double Cleansing

Sunscreen is also like makeup. It is not water soluble but the ingredients are oil soluble. Thus, a simple face wash is not enough to wash away the product. It is advised to double cleanse to remove the residual sunscreen. So, make sure you have a stronger face wash for your evenings to follow up after a cleansing balm or a cleansing milk or even micellar water. I like to use clinique take the day off cleansing balm and Ponds pollution face wash.

Glowing Skin Step #6 – Scrub and Mask

This is an optional step which acts as a pampering treatment or your spa day out. Exfoliate your skin at max twice a week and treat yourself to a mask. Currently, I am using the body shop vitamin C microdermabrasion and just herbs petalsoft rose face pack for face and forest essentials crystal rose sea salt scrub and moroccan rhassoul mask for body.

Glowing Skin Step #7 – Tone

I have not really been a very firm believer of the ritual of toning. But, the idea of spritzing the face with a fine mist of mineral-infused water sounds exotic. I did like using the vichy eau thermale. After washing your face, you have about just one minute to lock in the moisture. A toner is useful in creating extra moisture layer in your skin care routine. Currently, I am trying out the Kama lavender water but it is not really doing anything for me I feel.

That said, you could also do acid toning instead (I have yet to try it out!). The new age skin care routine includes using acids for the skin for exfoliation and clearing away the blackheads and pores. A swipe of the acid toner every alternate day (to avoid over-exfoliating) or every third day is give fresher looking and glowing skin. It also allows better absorption of the following products to be put on skin. Skip this if you have already exfoliated your skin or skip the exfoliation.

Glowing Skin Step #8 – Targeted Treatments

This is the time to apply the hardworking products like retinoids and serums meant for addressing a specific issue.ย  am currently in love with Estee Lauder ANR which I follow up after Kiehl’s vitamin C which I use in the night sometimes. You could use retinoids or other serums. This is the step for on the spot treatments as well like for your acne or blackheads or anything else specifically.

Glowing Skin Step #9 – Moisturizer or Face Oil

After the serum, you have to seal the products to give them time to work while you rest. So, follow up with a moisturizer without spf or even a face oil or both! Two drops of face oil should be great. Always follow up with face oil and then moisturizer but if you have so many products layered up on your skin, you would hardly need both unless you are in thar desert. Currently, I am using Kiehl’s midnight recovery face oil and forest essentials teenage night cream but only occasionally.

(Optional) Glowing Skin Tip – Simplify your skin care routine and use the correct products

If you are just like me and love to use only one product for day or night, I would just suggest to keep the routine simple and wrap it up as quickly as possible.

  • In the morning, vitamin C -> sunscreen
  • At night, double cleanse -> toner / floral water -> serum + oil (mix 2 drops of face oil with your serum and you are good to go)
  • Exfoliate once in three days and pamper with a mask

This has definitely worked for me and will work for you. Just that, your skin needs regular maintenance so listen to what your skin needs and you will have the glowing skin you want and deserve.

What is your secret to glowing skin?

What is your skin care routine? Do you like to do it the 10 step way like the korean skin care recommends or wrap it up as soon as possible with as few products as possible? Currently, I am testing out a face cream so I am using only the face cream both morning and night and nothing else and I have to say my skin is not really doing bad.

hi Sumitra. I am not sure using honey is a good idea. Honey will stain the bed clothes and pillow covers and it is difficult to sleep feeling sticky! Rose water toner is a good option.

Sunscreen and moisturizer alone can give a significant difference already. I don’t do it to lighten my skin though.

Anyway, this is a great post. You listed the safest ways to make the skin a little bit brighter. Some people do get overboard.

hey….simply using sunscreen is not gonna help. i have written a lot about the topic which i would suggest you to read if you want to know how sunscreen works.
      http://perfectskincareforyou.blogspot.in/search/label/sunscreen
sunscreen is not supposed to prevent tan. then, you are supposed to apply sunscreen in optimum quantity for proper protection.
      https://swathyandsky.com/2011/09/how-much-sunscreen-do-you-apply.html
i would suggest you to use neutrogena and if interested you can also go for this sunscreen though it is extremely expensive:
      http://perfectskincareforyou.blogspot.in/2012/03/mvo-moisturizing-face-screen-product.html
it prevents tanning and make sure you reapply. also, if you have been in sun too much, come back and apply ice on the skin and a hydrating and tan removing face mask. you can prepare one as well. it helps a lot ๐Ÿ™‚

hi smita…first of all, you shall have to develop a routine for yourself. make a list of all the products that suit you. i would suggest with face wash. if you already have one which suits you, perfect. now, moisturizer. since you have oily skin, i can suggest aloevera gel.
      https://swathyandsky.com/2012/03/rustic-art-aloevera-gel.html
then, scrubbing routine. exfoliate your face twice a week. mix salt and sugar in equal quantities and mix honey and scrub your face till sugar and salt both melt. try to get rock salt and brown sugar or jaggery or raw sugar.
then face masks. apply a face mask every alternate day at night. i would suggest biotique fruit mask or prepare one at home itself.
and, in the morning, use sunscreen without fail.

hi Sweety…generally dark skin around the chin means iron deficiency so i would suggest you to take proper balanced diet. for dark circles, you can apply a drop of almond oil every night before you go to sleep and sleep well. also remember that if it is hereditary, nothing much can be done for them! for oily skin, use rustic art aloevera gel as mositurizer.
      https://swathyandsky.com/2012/03/rustic-art-aloevera-gel.html
and, for dark color of the skin, apply tomato juice on your face at night daily. it will helps a lot ๐Ÿ™‚

also, reg. dirt settled deep in skin, i do not quite exactly understand what you mean by it but you can do oil cleansing method:
      https://swathyandsky.com/2009/12/oil-cleansing.html
and, exfoliate once in every two days since you have oily skin. use milk to exfoliate your skin as it has lactic acid!

Hey. Use tomato juice on your face every night and let it dry. Wash off. That will help, i guess.
And, keep your face clean all the time by avoiding pollution. Salicylic acid facewashes help. And, use clay masks.

and, you can not remove oil from the skin. you can just control the production. for that, use aloevera gel from the leaf regularly on your face and wherever you want to control oil production. apply the gel at night and leave it. it will get a bit sticky but do not worry about that.

check out acne skin care section of the blog for pimples and acne remedies.
      https://swathyandsky.com/search/label/acne%20skin%20care

also, acne can be due to hormonal changes in the body in which case it is very difficult to get rid of it. it will stabilize once your reach your twenties so if it is really bad then you can visit a dermatologist or i can suggest applying turmeric mixed with water as a paste on the pimples at night. let it dry and wash off. it did help with my acne!

Hello Swati !!!! Thanx for sharing all these tips.I use besan+green gram flour as my daily soap.It feel comfortable using this. But i have heard daily exfoliation damages your skin and leaves it loose with pores opened.is this true?? i have switched to face wash for few days but i feel my skin remains uncleaned and oily, hence i switched back to besan..i have small pores on my cheeks, which might have caused by besan and i feel my skin has become loose also..suggest me if the mythz true or not.

hi Sphurthi. i am so sorry for not replying earlier. ok, let me tell you one thing. it is sometimes the skin is naturally dark so to make it of same tone as the other is impossible. i too have the same issue. my forehead is darker than my face.

anyways, answering your question, please follow the tips mentioned in the above post and be diligent with sunscreen and apply face masks everyday. it really helps. also, eat more of iron in your diet. sometimes iron deficiency causes the skin to darken. i shall read more about it and get back ๐Ÿ™‚

do you apply sunscreen? don’t apply papaya daily. it is extremely harmful to apply it daily. papaya has strong acids which can be harmful to skin if used in excess. instead, buy a face mask available in the market which suits your skin or prepare one using gentler fruits like cucumber and tomato at home and apply that daily. mix cucumber and tomato juice, add a pinch of turmeric to multani mitti or besan and apply it daily. wash your face at night with face wash and apply this, let it dry and gently scrub it off. use sunscreen in the morning and cover up properly.

hi Akshay. first, change your face wash to something which controls oil and does not dry up your skin too much. you can try out the various men face washes which have come in the market. once you are able to control the oil, your skin will automatically look glowing. its because of the oil that it looks dull and dark. also, at night, apply tomato juice after washing your face, let it dry and wash off. moisturize. this will definitely improve your skin tone.

So can i have fairer skin if i will make my oily skin dry every time ?

      April 29, 2015 at 10:47 PM

hi Reshma. unfortunately, you have to use a sunscreen and please do not think that all chemicals are really bad for skin. it is nothing like that. all the products available in the market are released after quite an amount research on them. and, so are the sunscreens as well. there is quite a lot of ingredients debate making rounds on the internet but not everything is right so please do not worry much about it. also, please follow all the above steps diligently every single day and you will surely get results in a week.

also, reg. oily skin, try to wash your skin with warm salt water as a last rinse after using the face wash. also, use a face wash which suits your skin. you can try out garnier pore unclogging face wash but try not to use it every day but only when you have been in extreme amount of pollution and sun exposure or on alternate days or twice a week.

also, for moisturiser, do check out the gel based moisturizers in the market. or try using aloevera gel straight from the plant at night. this will definitely help reduce oiliness. hope this helps ๐Ÿ™‚

    Good post! ๐Ÿ™‚
Nice that you specified how to ‘get your complexion back’. I’m generally not hassled about my colour, but when I was growing up there was no concept of sunscreens back then, and I was in the sun hours and hours each day with no protection. That maybe caused damage to my skin beyond tanning. Since I’m lighter-complexioned, over the last few years I had a major problem of red patches on my cheeks that never went away. Various creams including the fab india de-pigmentation cream and many others did little to get rid of it.
Since then I’ve used turmeric masks on my face on a regular basis and it’s finally faded. In fact it’s the only thing that’s worked so far. I really think that’s one of the best ways to even out skin-tone and fade scars and marks etc.
