How Many Calories do we Need? – Diet 101 {Part II}

Nayantara Karnik · September 14, 2015 · 5 Comments

how many calories do we need

The last time I was here I gave you a background on diets and what it actually means to eat healthy versus the latest fad diet. That’s all well and good but in continuation, how does one actually go about this whole seemingly complicated process. Well, a little bit of hard work is in order, but I promise you, after the initial bit of effort it does get easier.

How Many Calories do We Need? Let us do some basic Math.

Calculating the amount of calories you need to consume is totally individual. The best option if you’re starting out is to find a calculator online, which will give you numbers based on typical algorithms using your current weight, height, age, gender etc. In general, the recommended calorie deficit is not more than 500 – 700 calories per day, though this could vary a little.

This means that if your current calorie maintenance level (the number of calories you need to maintain your current body weight) is 2500 per day, you should eat 2000 per day. That takes your weekly calorie deficit to 3500 (500×7), which according to standard calculations equals 1 lb or 0.5 kg of weight loss per week. If you are close to your recommended ideal weight (within 5kg), I suggest creating a still smaller calorie deficit of around 200-300 calories only.

It is literally dangerous to your health if you restrict your calorie intake drastically. Remember what I said earlier about how your body burns calories just to make all your organs function. This is the reason why anorexia can be life-threatening. When the body is deprived of sufficient nutrients over time, the organs can actually suffer and even fail in the long run.

For women, it is recommended to eat no less than 1200 calories per day and for men not less than 1500 per day. And, even that I would say is less than the average person should consume, unless you’re a very tiny, old, inactive lady who needs only the bare minimum to function! So don’t use 1200 as a baseline regardless of your current size and activity level, most likely you need to eat significantly more than that even if you’re on a deficit.

Kama Ayurveda Rose Jasmine Body Oil

Kama Ayurveda Rose Jasmine Body Oil

Kama Ayurveda Rose Jasmine Body Oil is an old love. And, again this time around, I loved using it.

I love using body oils, especially in the shower itself. The steam helps the oil gets absorbed really quickly and keeps the skin really well-moisturized. I am not able to recall how I learned this trick but it works like a charm. I urge you to try it.

Still smells like roses and jasmine, the fragrance is delicate and does not hurt the nose. Neither does the fragrance lingers long enough on the skin. The delicate scent of Kama Ayurveda Rose Jasmine Body Oil comes from essential oils than from any synthetic additives.

What I love about Kama Ayurveda Rose Jasmine Body Oil is that it is a dry oil. The moment you spread the oil on your palms and apply it on the skin, it gets absorbed. There is no oiliness or stickiness left behind and the moisturization lasts almost 6-8 hours at the minimum.

One interesting thing to note is the change in the packaging. Earlier, I had complained about the bottle not having a stopper so this time around, they have a stopper with a cap to plug the hole in whenever you are closing the bottle to prevent leakage. I would still not call it travel-friendly or say the packaging is premium but a small improvement from before.

Definitely, the prices have risen for Kama overall in the last few years but I still feel this is a bit more reasonably priced than a few other products from the same brand. In 2015, the price of the rose jasmine body oil was Rs 795 and now it is priced at Rs 1350. Not really inexpensive but worth trying out once if you do have the budget for it.

Just Gossip Vol. 42 – Vacationing and Hauling and Everything Else!

vacation haul

Huh…just in case if you have been wondering where did I disappear? Well, it turns out that my life has to be on the go instead of the pre-planned I always prefer. We had to go somewhere but getting the visa took time and then tickets had just sky rocketed. And, since we had availed the leaves, we decided to go some other place for which we had to wait like 7 days to get the visa and we did not have the passports till the day we were flying. And, then, the tickets were booked on the same day and then we flew adhoc!

How was Malaysia?

I was, in fact, thinking of starting a travel diary series to document all my travels. For the interested, we do not prefer packages. We prefer to roam around the city at our own sweet pace even if we do not cover the entire place. That is a excuse to visit the place again 🙂

Anyways, Malaysia was awesome except for the extreme weather it faces. It would be really hot sunny day and the next hour it would be raining cats and dogs. I shall do a complete write-up of the trip in another post coz we had such a gala time. Honestly, we did not really go around much but we were soooooo tired from the trip!
