Mythbusters: The Truth About Vegan and Vegetarian Diet

When it comes to diet and lifestyles, perhaps none are more controversial or talked about than vegetarianism and veganism. Most people follow these diets for a healthier lifestyle, although some also cite environmental and ethical reasons for practicing such.

There are many parallels between the two, but their distinct difference is that vegetarians may consume animal byproducts such as dairy (lacto-vegetarians), eggs (ovo-vegetarians), or both (ovo-lacto vegetarians), while vegans avoid eating any animal-derived products at all, including honey. Vegans also tend to avoid using items made from animals and their body parts, such as leather and wool clothing and accessories. This is why “vegetarian” is often referred to as a diet, while “vegan” is more often described as a lifestyle.

Here are some of the other things you should know about if you are planning to follow a vegetarian or vegan diet.

You Can Still Drink Milk

Not dairy milk of course. But there are a lot of plant-based milk products that you can find in the market to satisfy your tastebuds, especially if you are new to the diet and are used to the taste and texture of milk. Apart from being a satisfying beverage, you can also use plant milks to supplement your diet with the necessary nutrients. Hazelnut milk, for example, is an excellent source of vitamin E and manganese, while almond milk contains calcium and potassium, as well as a decent amount of vitamin E. Most plant milks are also cruelty free, which makes them ideal for vegetarians and vegans alike.

Your Protein Intake Won’t Suffer

One of the main concerns about switching to a vegetarian or vegan diet is the seeming lack of protein sources. However, many people are already over-consuming protein, especially if they eat a balanced omnivorous diet. Besides, it is already common knowledge by now that there are many plants and seeds that are excellent sources of protein; even non-vegetarians turn to these protein sources in attempts to make their eating habits a little bit healthier.

4 Reasons for Bloating and Tummy Bulge

Updated from 13 January, 2015. Bloating is a issue which I have personally faced and seeing it with my friends and family. Mr. P bloats up a lot! Anything and he bloats and then it becomes gas in the tummy. Rice, fried foods, even untimely munching bloats him up.  And, this is a problem with everyone today whose lifestyle does not follow a routine. Eating at correct times in sufficient quantities is a good way to start fighting gastric problems. Anyways, let us get back to the post and see what five reasons could be causing your bloating.

My colleague always used to complain about chocolate. She used to hate it, not because of diet reasons which she was obviously conscious of!! But, because after eating chocolate, her tummy used to come out.

Have you ever noticed your tummy bulges after having meals or anything in particular? I have never noticed when it precisely happens to me but it does happen. I think it helps to keep track of what we are eating (a food journal) to overcome these issues. What do you say??

Leaving that aside, I wanted to discuss what all could cause bloating in the body!! The reasons can range from in-taking too much of salt causing water retention to irritable bowel syndrome to even hormonal issues!! Though salt is the biggest reason why you can be bloated, there are quite a lot of other reasons too.

Simple Habits which can cause Bloating

I am pretty sure most of us have seen Breathe series which was highly publicized in the month of January and aired on Amazon Prime. The series was made to encourage organ donation in India. The protagonist is a desperate father of a 5 or 8-year old son, who needed an organ transplant for a long life, who goes on a killing spree to get a donor. It was well-played out in spite of the unsatisfying finale.

In few cases where a person’s brain has stopped showing any kind of activity even though the body is functioning artificially, the person is for all reasons dead in reality. It is difficult for people to understand that when their loved ones are put under artificial stimulation. In these cases, the body of the patient is suitable for vital organ donations and transplants.

Organ donation could be one of the biggest motivators for you and your family to lead a healthy life.

How to become a registered organ donor?

You can register yourself on the organ donation website – http://donatelifeindia.org/. A few points you should keep in mind.
