The temperatures are on an all-time high and summers have started way before their schedule. For me, taking care of hair in summers has always been difficult but it is particularly more so this year. The heat is not helping at all and hair is getting all tangled and limp in just a day. So, I decided to follow a few simple and practical hair tips for my summer hair care.
Summer Hair Care Tips
Get a new Hairstyle
This is something which your hair needs RIGHT NOW! A springtime clean for your hair. Get rid of the split ends and damage and make it feel fresh. If you do like colors, go for a fresh one this season. Color melting technique which shows off multiple tones of color in your hair is a must try.
On a side note, the same Mr. P who hated my hair color last season urged me to color my hair again 😀
Wash as Many Times as need Be
Hair Products
Invest in a good shampoo. That is a first in hair care routine. A good shampoo is gentle on your hair and cleanses it without removing the natural oils. I have seen a great improvement in my hair after going SLS free in my shampoos. But, remember, shampoo can just cleanse your hair and scalp, do not expect it to be a miracle worker!
How Many times to Wash?
A very debatable point is how many times should you wash your hair. From day 1, I have always maintained my stand on washing as per need. The goal of washing is to keep the scalp clean and if your scalp is all dirty and slimy after a day in pollution and sun, wash it off! But, if you have stayed indoors and spent time mostly in air conditioned environment, you can skip a few days between the washes.
Optimal Hair Wash Time
There is something call optimal hair wash time for each person. For me, my hair looks good only for one day (with no hair fall) after wash so I usually try to wash my hair on alternate days. Find your optimal hair wash time and follow the routine religiously. This would ensure bouncy looking hair at all times.
Condition, Condition and Over-Condition
But, with lighter products. Use conditioners and serums instead of heavy hair spas which weigh down the hair. As much you might try to avoid, you end up washing the hair a little too much which makes conditioning very important. It keeps your hair color looking fresh as well. And, do not forget those regular hair spa appointments.
Air-drying might Not be a very Good Idea!
Well, I would not say go the gadget way but I have seen that in summers, hair dries up pretty fast and generally it dries up flat. Yes, it depends on your hair type but this is more or less true for all hair types. The hair has no bounce.
To give your mane a bit of lift, blot excess water in hair with your towel, take a dollop of leave-in serum, flip your head over and blow dry for just a minute all over your hair to make it damp. This adds a slight sheen to your hair color as well. But, beware of overheating if you have red hair, especially!
Root Treatment
Whether you like to oil your hair or not in this hot weather, you can help your hair grow by stimulating the roots. Massaging in the essential oils, hair treatment ampoules or even drops of argan oil or evening primrose oil yields amazing hair growth in the summer months and by autumn, you are ready to sport longer hair!!

Great ideas indeed, Swati!
I can relate to you. I’m currently in a love-hate relationship with my hair. It’s 36C already in Chennai. How about your place?
I hate my summer hair very much as it gets tangled/clumsy in a jiffy. If I stay in an air-conditioned room, I feel better. But once I step out, my hair messes up to the extent of irritating my mood.
I do wash my hair twice-thrice a week. Trying to switch to alternative-days, as like you.
Happy blogging!

haha. it was really hot here but now its a lot better since it rained yesterday and couple of days have been cooler. the switch from air-con to non-air-con is really tough and acts real bad on skin and hair. I absolutely hate summers coz of that! but rains in hyderabad are awesome so awaiting that now 🙂 just one month of heat to go.
