Books 2014 Vol. 1 – “A Treacherous Likeness” by Lynn Shephard

Swathy · January 4, 2014 · Leave a Comment

I used to write the book reviews on my other blog but I am not able to post on it even occasionally so I thought I would rather record my books on this blog only. Don’t worry. I am not making it a regular feature. I am just gonna post this on weekends and weekdays I will talk beauty. Yeah, I know I have hardly been talking since the last month!!
Anyways, I had been dying to read a good book since a long time. And, then I found this in one of the airports but I hardly got time to open it till last 15 days. But, once opened, I was totally hooked to it. Now, what is the book about?
Well, this is one of the books which tries to create a fictional plot based on the life of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelly and his wife, Mary Shelly, the author of Frankenstein. It tries to unravel the mysteries of the poet’s childhood traumas, the suicides surrounding the figure, his marriages, his love affaires and the death of his kids.
Fanny Imlay, elder step-sister of Mary Shelly, commits suicide. Harriet Westbrook, first wife of Shelly, is abandoned by Shelly and later gets pregnant, though it is debatable by whom, is also found drowned in Serpentine in Hyde Park, London. Soon after the first wife’s death, Shelly gets married to Mary and leaves London along-with his newly wed wife and her step-sister, Claire.
It has been indicated that Claire and Shelly have intimate relations but it was never really made clear. But, the tragedy of Mary and Shelly’s marriage also lies in the fact that none of their first three children and one adopted daughter survive. It is believed that Shelly’s life was haunted with his own past and was prone to bouts of melancholy and depression. He was also highly delusional.
Thus, this books creates a fictional thriller piece using all the associated characters and real-life incidents. It definitely is an amazing book for all crime and thriller lovers. It is supposed to be a sequel to Tom-All-Alone’s but the book can be read independently as well.

Its Just Life Vol. 3 – Not all things happen for the good!!

Or, may be they do. Only we are too short-sighted to understand the play of universe!! Well, ok, I am going to be a little morbid on the second last day of the year. For tomorrow, I am reserving a personal post – the highs and lows of this year!! But, before that I wanted to talk about an unfortunate event that took place in my friend’s life!!
Well, few months back, I think I did talk about my friend’s fear of the baby’s heart not being audible! The same friend had to undergo a C-section last Sunday due to some viral infection and increase in platelet count. And, she had just entered the seventh month or probably in the middle of it. So, the baby was really tiny and was kept in the incubator but unfortunately he could not survive beyond a week.
How awful it can be is something which I can not even begin to fathom. In fact, this was quite a turn in my life coz I never really had to go to give condolences to anyone, not even my mom and dad for that matter when their loved ones passed away. Till date, I have been really affected only by two deaths – one is my grandfather’s and later one of my friend’s mom passed away due to cancer!!
And, coming back to the topic of my friend’s loss, when I conveyed this message to one of our colleagues who is an elder person, what she said was something very profound. She said whatever happened, it happened for the good. My friend was not really ready and the baby came unexpectedly and there are too many problems in her life to have a baby at her hands. In a way if I am look at the circumstances, this might be right as well but somehow you can never really console yourself to the bereavement of a life!! Who said everything happens for the good?

How can life be so cruel to me? I have forever thought that being married would be a totally different experience and here I am often forgetting that I am married! When people say your husband, I look at them blankly!!
Going to any party or function feels like I have landed back in time when I used to accompany my parents to a place full of unknown people and I was always so awkward! The only difference is now its minus parents. In fact, my married life feels like a live-in with a friend with parental consent 😀
And, here I am with one month already over!! Gosh, how did I even land up here and especially since last 20 days have so trying on me with me being lifted and thrown into some other dimension of the universe. I have to concede here that now I understand why girls should be married off early. Being used to staying alone does complicate the situations further.
Nah, if you are thinking something major unhappy events have occurred, nothing of the sort. Only that I have been thrown in a phase of perpetual confusion where I am totally wandering down in a storm. My friends are all saying that I am thinking too much and I should only enjoy the moment.
But, I am somehow not able to achieve that euphoria associated with new brides. Its like I am just waiting for something to happen and then I will be happy but happiness never really comes that way!! You have to be happy no matter what and then wait for the better to happen, right?
Is any of you going through the same phase as mine? Can you relate to my confusions? Any advise would be welcome 🙂
