Oil before hair mask? {Your Opinion}

Swathy · December 19, 2011 · 10 Comments

So, this question came out of one of the reader’s queries. So, I wanted to ask you what you think – should you oil your hair before applying hair masks (homemade) or not?
Well, here is what I think. No. Why? Hair has a limited absorbing capacity and you would want your hair to absorb the nourishment you are providing the hair through the hair mask, whether it is an over-the-counter product or home remedy. And, when you oil your hair, the hair soaks in the oil because of which the hair’s absorbing capacity reduces and it will not be able to soak in the entire hair mask’s goodness. So, it is always better to apply a hair mask, any hair treatment or even oil on dry and, preferably, washed hair so that it is free from dirt, grime and its own oils.
It is often said that hair conditioner should not be applied on dripping wet hair. Why? Because, hair is already soaked in water so how will the conditioner be able to act on the hair except for simply coating it. Well, this is my opinion and I would definitely love to know yours. And, one thing I would like to make clear is that there is no hard and fast rule for hair or skin care. It all depends on the logic and a little understanding of how the skin and hair work and what works best for one.

What do you think?
Don’t forget to register your opinion on:

How often should you change your pads?
How many products do you layer on your face?
How long do you leave the conditioner?
Is Vanity Silly?
Hair Mask first or Conditioner?
Budgeting on Shopping
Face Mask Sheets or Face Masks?

      hey…actually I am also confused about this!!! but as far as logic goes, applying oil will reduce the absorption of nutrients from the henna pack so I guess you can apply henna pack and afterward condition it well to counter the drying effects of henna.

        Actually you should oil your hair from root to tip , keep it overnight , and then apply heena . For applying heena , it is mandatory because heena actually is a drying agent ,it takes out the oil from your hair . So if you are applying heena without oiling prior to it , it may leave your hairs very dull and frizzy after you wash it off . So the proper way is to oil , den apply heena , wash it off with water , then again oil after drying your hair , then shampoo it or cleanse it with whatever u use regularly to cleanse your scalp . Remember never to shampoo your hair shafts . Only the scalp . That will take away the natural oils .

      yes, Siri…even I used to this when I applied henna to my hair!!! I would leave the oil for a day, who will take bath twice???? I am too lazy for that 😀 but this leaves the hair pretty soft and shiny!!!
