Since my wedding, I have been in search of an anti-allergic sindoor product. All the local brands including shringar and another brand which starts with letter ‘k’ were basically making my entire forehead itch horribly. So, I decided to give the bigger brands a try. So, let us check out whether they fixed my problem.
Lakme Jewel Sindoor
Price : Rs 125
As you can see, it is maroon and a bit glittery. It comes with a long sponge applicator which makes it easy to apply as a bindi on the forehead as well. And, the color shade is perfect and goes with all colors and styles. It has been almost a year since I got this product and it has dried up a bit.
Lotus Herbals Divine Dew Herbal Sindoor
Price : ~ Rs 120
Unfortunately, the sales girl sold me a wrong color. This one is not maroon in color but rather more fluorescent red which really does not go well with all the clothes and styles. I think this variation is Love Drop.
And, it also comes with a long handled sponge applicator which is a bit too long and has a wider tip so if you want to apply it as a bindi on the forehead, it comes too big if you are not careful.
I bought this one easily about 7-8 months back and still the product is fine in texture and has not dried up at all.
Did either of them suit me?
And, to add to this, both of these products did not suit my skin. After applying them for a few hours, my forehead starts to itch right exactly at the spot where I apply bindi. But, it does not always itch on the partition where I apply it as the sindoor so I am quite confused as to why my forehead itches so badly that I scratch out the bindi.
In fact, my forehead developed small boils when I was married due to the excess application of kumkum at that time! Till date, no kumkum really suited my skin. I wish there was a natural alternative available for this product!!

Hi Swati. Have you tried powder sindoor. I believe that might not give you any itching or rash problems. I have never tried liquid sindoor but have used the powder ones a lot (any brand) and have never faced any issue.
Swati says
hey Rosh! long time 🙂 i use these sindoors to put bindi so can not use the powder as it would not stay! but, probably I should give it a try!! thanks 🙂

Good comparison Swathi! But oops.. Sad that it caused you allergies! My mom says a change in brand or switching to liquid/powder bindi/sindoors all of a sudden can cause that. She has been using the local one called ‘Gopuram’ for years and she finds it good.
Sadly, everything is polluted these days. It’s hard to find a pure product! I somewhere heard that these are made from Turmeric. Do you think a homemade version can be possible?
Swati says
yeah, even I wanted something homemade but no idea if it is possible to make at home because how to get the red color is the question. otherwise, we can mix turmeric and even sandalwood. was only thinking about red color. may be ratanjot oil can help but not sure!

Hi there!
Since you were asking for natural alternatives, why don’t you get some real vermilion from Kolkata? My maa’s been using it for the past 28 years and it’s excellent. I guess there are shops selling “shidur” (sindoor)from Kolkata almost everywhere…I do not know about Hyderabad, though. You could look up some stores online that could courier sindoor to you from kolkata. (My maa uses the one from “Ranga Java” and its looks great. The colour is beautiful and I suggest you but a metallic sindoor dani and a metallic stick thingy to apply it) Hope you find this useful 🙂
