What to look for in a product review? {Beauty Products}

Swathy · February 4, 2012 · 5 Comments

Yesterday, I talked about my disapppointment with a product I bought after reading a lot of positive reviews. So, I thought it would make a good post to write on what one should look in the reviews and how to decide whether to buy a product or not? I recently came across disappointment buying a product after reading a lot of positive reviews and thought that this situation might have happened with many of you, probably even after reading my reviews!!! So, I thought it would make a good post to write about how to choose a product after reading the reviews.
No fault of Reviewers
First and foremost, one must always keep in mind that every product reacts differently for everyone. So, when reviewing it, a person is speaking only with their personal experiences and sometimes, it can be an accumulated experience if a group of friends. And, this is no way can be generalized over a large number of people. So, do not blame anyone if a thing doesn’t work for you. And, also remember that just because something doesn’t work doesn’t mean that nothing else also will not work 🙂 So, be open-minded about it.
Skin or Hair Profile of the Reviewer
Ok, so the first thing which you should always check out is the profile of a person who is doing the review. If they have oily hair, you can’t expect them to review a dry hair product and shouldn’t really depend up on it. Many people write that since it didn’t suit their combination skin, it might suit an oily skin or some such statement and I dare say even I might have written but this can be misleading at times. It need not be necessarily so.
So, you should be always read the review carefully and try to find out what exactly is the skin or hair profile of a person and what it is going through right now and whether it is similar to your condition or not. These things are not important when you are looking at swatches of a particular shade and deciding which one you like best but definitely comes in helpful when you are trying to decide what kind of a product is it.
Don’t rely on a single review
Yes, that is very important. Never go for a single review. Even when I write reviews, I try to read as many reviews of the same product as possible and try to judge if my experience was similar or not. So, when you are trying to decide on a product, be aware that many people might have put up their reviews so always survey well. You should also go to mouthshut and such review platforms which have reviews from various people.
Bloggers reviews are more reliable as you have a connection with them and can trust them to quite an extent depending on how long you have been following a particular blog. Media is too widespread today so be media savvy. This way you wouldn’t even blame a single person.
Comments
Yes, comments on a review are very helpful because it invites opinion from lot of people who might have used the product so always go through comments. Most of the comments might turn out of context but you will find a needle in a haystack.
Rest of the things include price and ingredient list which you can decide depending on your budget and preference of certain ingredients and avoiding certain of them.

Earthy Goods Forest Honey Nourishing Handmade Soap {Product Review}

Swathy · February 3, 2012 · 7 Comments

Last week, I discussed with you the difference between a soap and a beauty bar. So, the speciality of this soap is that it is handmade and full of natural ingredients for real.

Price: Rs 95 for 100gms.
Ingredients

Pros
– moisturizes the skin and keeps it soft
– made up of natural ingredients
Cons
– melts very soon 🙁
My Experience

It is a really good awesome soap. It is moisturizing and doesn’t let your skin dry. In winters, I went without a moisturizer after my bath both at night and in the day time and my skin didn’t really feel stretched at all. So, in summers, its gonna be great!!! And, I can definitely say this is one of the few soaps I have loved completely and I do love the ingredients.
Ok, there is one problem – Palm Oil.  If you are not aware, palm trees are getting endangered due to their extensive deforestation so palm oil is being actually avoided in products and its substitutes are being used. Sometime back, Lush also started a “Save Palm Trees” campaign (something like that if I didn’t get it right exactly). So, I would definitely appreciate that ingredient to be not used.

And, I also feel good that the company is trying to do a bit of good for the rural people. And, you should definitely check out all the things they have in their store.

Vedic Line Neem & Brahmi Disinfecting Face Wash {Product Review}

Swathy · January 27, 2012 · 4 Comments

Price: Rs 110 for 120ml
Ingredients

Purified Water, Neem Oil, Brahmi, Tea Tree Oil, Camphor, SLES, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Benzoate

“In a nutshell”

Pros

  • Ingredient List is very impressive
Cons

  • Consistency is very thin so most of the face wash falls off my hands when I try to apply it on my face 🙁
Wish List (to the brand)

  • While you use Sodium Benzoate in place of parabens, why not use something else for SLES??
  • And, yes, packaging is not really catchy!!! Would love to see them packaged like some of the other products you have.

My Experience
As you can see in the pic, this is green in color. No color has been mentioned ont he ingredient list so I am assuming that brahmi and neem oil impart their color to the face wash. And, the smell of the face wash is herbal. And, before proceeding with the review, let me tell you that it is more suitable for an oily or combination skin and one which is prone to breakouts. And, since it is winters, my skin is not all that oily so I have no idea where it controls oil or not. And, similarly, I don’t really break out a lot so I can’t judge the face wash on those grounds either.

Anyways, the thing which actually bothered me a lot was the consistency of the product. It is very thin and it slips off easily even if you turn your hand a bit so while applying, the face wash does fall down and then, I have to take a little bit more of it. Ok, anyways, the product does foam very less even though it has SLES and I think there is not much of SLES either in the product as it is listed pretty low on the list. But, I have one more grouch with this face wash and that is that it leaves a film on my skin if not washed thoroughly and you really need lot of hot water to get rid of the film.

And, it does stretch out my skin a little but then in winters, my skin often dry without a moisturizer so I can’t really blame the product for that because I used some other product too and faced almost same thing. And, these days, my skin is going through extra-dry period. But, I really think that this would be a great product in summers for me when the oil is more on my skin. Overall, I don’t think I am the best judge for this face wash.
