Sky Diaries

Sky and her Nemesis.

Swathy · August 27, 2026 · Leave a Comment

reactive dog, dog reactivity, outdoor exposure, socialization

This girl is going to be the death of us!! Today, all of a sudden we were attacked and I could not stop laughing.

What am I talking about? Let me start from the beginning.

Everyone who meets Sky will describe her differently. She comes across as friendly, adorable, well-behaved, nervous, active, fattu (extremely coward) or downright aggressive depending on the temperament of the person she is meeting.

Having said that, when it comes to her own kind or size, she is a bully. When she doesn’t like the other dog (which is mostly the case) or finds a suspicious stray balloon billowing in the breeze aimlessly, she is wont to bark. She loves jumping on the lizard, pawing at the poor snail and chasing the cats. So, naturally, when she finds any creature lounging under a car, she does everything to ensure the place is returned to its original empty state just for her to sniff and enjoy.

Such is the usual scenario on our walks. However, this day was going to be different. One morning (a month or two back), Sky was casually investigating the interesting smell near an SUV with no intention of jumping on anyone. Seeing her carefree, I went into a thought break and lo behold, I am jerked out of the way and I witness a cat screaming at Sky for daring to step around a car. The lunge was so sudden, it stunned Sky for a second. As she gathered her marbles, she tried to use her voice but the result was a long grumble in the loudest volume she could manage.

That was my dog who is known for her loud barks and who has never once grumbled or made a squeak in the last 5 years.

In her confusion, Sky continued the walk. While coming back the same route, Sky herself steered clear of the side where she was almost assaulted. However, we soon discovered the cat was still tracking Sky. She even crawled from one car to the other following us with a withering stare till we disappeared from her horizon.

Although I still couldn’t stop laughing, I felt bad for Sky. Poor girl was seriously shaken out of her wits. Thankfully, Sky was back to normal by the fourth day. But, I do suppose she thinks about the cat whenever she approaches any car since then. Just the other day, it had rained and the roads were slick and muddy. Sky was walking in the middle of the road to avoid getting dirty, I was relaxed and lost in the good news I had received when I was yanked urgently.

The same cat was standing opposite us, all her fur and fury raised and erect, stalk walking towards the same car, settling down by the rear wheel, all the while staring at Sky as if daring her. Sky got her memo, did a full U-turn and walked back while stealing glances at the cat trying to make out why she was being bullied for a change. On our next round, she (Sky) refused to take the right, changed the side of the road and made a beeline straight home.

The final straw was today when we walked by the same offending car. We were towards the other side of the road and going straight, Sky wasn’t even looking or sniffing and suddenly I find her throwing herself from my left to my right with the cat right behind her. Why the cat chose to accost us, she can only answer. Now, it just feels like the cat is taking revenge for some other lifetime. Today did give me a heart attack and a good dose of endorphins. Now, Sky stands at the crossroads, calculates if she should take the risk and decides it’s not worth it. We are leaving soon so I suppose it was the cat’s way of saying Boo, Good bye!

I Thought My Dog was a Bigot!

Sky, dog, indie, life, disabled people

We have a sassy hunk, Summer, in our apartment. The first time we met him, Sky was so excited, she was dancing to greet him (she usually likes Shih Tzus). However, once she got the complete picture, her ardor cooled off instantly. Whereas, the boy is always so sweet and starts coo-ing the moment he sees us.

Why? Because Summer can see only through one eye. Due to an unfortunate accident, he lost his other eye. My queen, at times, deigns to return his excitement but mostly ignores him. It could be a simple disdain for the weak. On the other hand, may be she is too careful so she doesn’t accidentally hurt him. Or, may be she doesn’t understand how to behave around him.

And, that’s when it hit – Isn’t that how we behave when we are confronted with any kind of disability face to face?

Apart from the beggars on the street, half of whom we already know are pretending, or a few sales people in select shops, how many disabled people does a regular human encounter in their entire lives? Unless there is someone in the immediate family or friend circle, the disabled people exist on an entirely different planet than us.

Disabilities come in various degrees and most of the people fall somewhere on the spectrum, rarely do they fall on the 100% disabled zone. And, most often, the default reaction of anyone, privileged enough to never have been in contact with any disability, is to feel sorry for them. We have never thought of them as regular human beings, just like us. And, that’s where the problem starts.

I myself have had a minimal interaction with disability. As part of the arranged marriage mart, I came across a well-educated guy who had some issue with his leg. Not exactly sure what the issue was but it was enough to impede him from activities like driving, cycling, etc. Walking was fine but of course not aesthetic enough. He looked decent, talked intelligently, was probably earning well, but none of that mattered.

I still wonder how my life would have worked out had I pushed for that relationship. In that entire equation, this was the distinct impression I got – if I said yes, I would be bestowing a favor on the guy and his entire family would be thankful for that. Just because he was unlucky enough, something which could easily have happened to me or anyone else in the world.

To make matters worse, the opportunity to experience disability for a few hours has turned into a capitalist enterprise. A conceptual restaurant treats you to a three-course meal in complete darkness so you can get a glimpse of the daily lives of blind people. Turning someone’s reality into a sensory experience felt more like a mockery to me.

My health struggles taught me the importance of gentle ramps as opposed to stairs. Now, I can not unsee how the ramp that leads to the sidewalk in my residential community, worth crores of rupees, ends abruptly with a step. I, with all my intact faculties, have struggled to constantly step up and down the entire one kilometer long walkway. God forbid if someone in the wheelchair decides to take a stroll. Or, may be they should just stay at home!

The truth is society was never designed to be inclusive. In fact, the world we live in is not designed for senior citizens, gravely injured people or even pregnant women, let alone the differently abled. We prefer a healthy population and while we acknowledge the presence of the different strata, we prefer to keep distance. That is more comfortable for our vanity.

We are afraid of anything which looks and feels alien to us. We do not know how to process it, and that’s why we shun it. Not because we hate it, but because we do not understand it. That’s probably what Sky is doing also – trying to understand why Summer feels different from all other dogs. Since she doesn’t have the answer, she does not know how to react. May be, with time, she will learn. And, so will we.

With Love, Swathy and Sky

A love letter to Sky

Sky, birthday, gotcha day, pet parenting, swathy and sky

Four years ago, on this day, you didn’t prance into my life but quietly laid a claim on my soul. If there was ever a miracle in my life, it was you and how you came to be. It is a story how destiny brought us together on a rainy day to save each other.

I was on my way back home from seeing other puppies and your rescuer called me asking for help. It was raining pins and needles and you and your siblings had no shelter. The only selfish reason I did my best to help out was a “what if”. What if my baby is in danger?

I never birthed you but you still came from me, may be we share the same star dust. We may not share a DNA but you are a mirror to me. You show me how scared I am, you show me how stubborn and irrational I can be, you show me my anxiety and you remind me to chuck the future, to live in the now. The moment I see you, something inside me awakens; when I touch you, time slows down. You do not speak, yet I understand everything you think. May be this is what they call “the soul remembering”.

I had already stopped rebelling way before you came, I had quieted down, learned to choose my battles; but you showed me how impatient and short tempered I was, how I was not giving space to myself, how I was not pausing and resting, what I so desperately needed. You came and you made everything alright. Four years ago, I made the mistake of not accepting you, not showering you with love and not allowing you in my space. You became a dog roaming in the house, unable to rest because of a lack of access, to a dog who shares my bed and blankets. Now, I don’t care if my bed is full of fur and dander yet others are still not allowed to keep their unwashed feet on it.

Sky, birthday, gotcha day, pet parenting, swathy and sky

I could never write letters of such intimacy earlier, even now I am struggling with words, putting them out to the world comes with the danger of judgement, self more than others. Yet, I profess my undying devotion to you. You are my God, you are my devil, you became my shadow. You gave me a purpose and a structure even though I never gave you a life better. The bad parent guilt is stronger.

I still recall those excruciating moments you were scared and hiding under the bed, I felt so helpless. A thousand times and more I have apologized since, and couldn’t be sorrier. That day I understood the anger and the helplessness of a parent, why they resort to abuse and how futile it can be. The child doesn’t understand anything else but the cold danger and the warmth of safety.

I was supposed to be your umbrella, I became the stick. I have atoned for my sins and yet punish myself. Now, when I lose my patience, I take a pause and carry you gently. Thank you for making me the adult I was supposed to be, an adult I missed being.
