Some people come with an amazing amount of will power and discipline. They do not seem to have any trouble following a rigorous routine to build new habits. Others, like myself, need a lot more motivation and perseverance to stick to new changes.

    • Dog Training Principle #2 – Train for a very Short Period
    • Dog Training Principle #3 – Teach Foundations First
    • Dog Training Principle #4 – Be Consistent and Track your Progress
    • Dog Training Principle #5 – Take a Step Back When Required
  • Summarizing the Framework
  • How long have I followed this framework?

I have been suffering with severe neck pain which radiates into the head and causes severe nausea for the past 3-4 years. It started during the lockdown when I would spend hours hunching over my laptop. Neck and shoulder exercises look to be the obvious solution.

However, over the years instead of healing myself, I had convinced myself that exercise can not heal the pain and I had prepared myself for perpetual pain. Finally last November due to some twist of fate, I realized my own lack of awareness was the hindrance. What I really needed was to take charge of my health and direct my action towards it.

Now, that first step was clear, the next hurdle was how to build the habit of exercising and stick to it consistently. In the past, I have often exercised enthusiastically for a few days and discontinued and doing the same would not have helped me. I needed to look at building the new habit from a different approach, something which sticks and adapts as part of my lifestyle.

It’s the realization that taking the same approach you have been following for years will NOT work; that realization sparks the CHANGE.

4 Steps to Stop Getting Sick after a Serious Illness?

Swathy · March 7, 2024 · Leave a Comment

Originally published in March 2020. Looking back, this post about how to stop getting sick is very personal and still continues to hold true.

I had been diagnosed with an autoimmune condition way back in 2016 and post a treatment course, things seemed better. However, we failed to realize the severity of the disease and how it can affect other body organs. The condition aggravated sometime in 2022 and I am still trying to stabilize my body with the aftermath.

For someone who used to hardly get sick for a day in the entire year to suffering an autoimmune disease, I can relate to a deteriorated health and body. It is difficult for others to understand what happens in such chronic conditions, however mild or severe. If you do not take care of yourself, you can end up with a severe form of the disease.

In most cases, it is not possible to cure the condition. You can only manage the symptoms for as long as possible. It is helpful to remember that just like other illnesses, there is a chance of relapse of the autoimmune diseases. Therefore, it becomes much more important to start building a healthy routine and body as soon as possible.

Not only does this impact your lifestyle but also your mental health. I reached a stage where I did not have the energy to get up and brush my teeth. In fact, the conditions can weaken us enough that we keep getting sick all the time. In my case, I am highly prone to cold and cough and flu which would not go away for weeks together.

Leading an inactive lifestyle becomes a habit as we age. As we grow older and settle down in life with comfortable jobs, we also get habituated to how we are changing physically. However, it is not a pleasant feeling when you are no longer fitting into your shirts or dresses or when you cannot bend to tie your shoelaces. Not having a regular physical activity in our daily routine affects us both physically and mentally.

According to the WHO, 60 to 85% of people in the world—from both developed and developing countries—lead sedentary lifestyles, making it one of the more serious yet insufficiently addressed public health problems of our time. (Source)

Lack of exercise or any type of physical activity not only causes high blood pressure, cardiac arrests and diabetes but also leads to elevated levels of stress, anxiety, insomnia and depression and, in some cases, even early death. It also leads to loss of focus, lack of attention and concentration along with decreased levels of energy and feeling of lethargy. Incidentally, women and older adults are more prone to lead an inactive lifestyle compared to men.

3 Ways your Inactive Lifestyle is Making you Sick

Gaining Weight

Well, sitting or being a couch potato makes you gain weight and that is no secret. Obesity is a leading disease among inactive people. And, it can lead to worse health problems including cardiac diseases, knee problems, diabetes, etc.
