Baby Skin Care Routine {Skin Care}

Swathy · January 28, 2010 · 264 Comments

Today, I would be telling you about the baby skin care routine followed by many South Indians. Babies have very soft and delicate skin. So, you have to be extra cautious while taking care of their skin. And, they have under developed muscles and bones too.  Therefore, a general routine of their skin and health care is followed:

  • To give strength to their bones and muscles, the new-born are massaged with hot oil (preferably coconut oil) to give strength to their muscles.
  • The babies should never be given long and hot baths. Always make sure that the water is lukewarm. And, do not give them a tub bath. The tub bath is very drying for their skin.
  • Babies have very less hair on their bodies. And, even if they have hairs, do not worry much about them. The roots of the hairs are very weak and they go on getting strong as the baby grows. Therefore, use the chickpea (besan) flour or green gram dal (sunnipindi) flour to get rid of the unwanted hair on their body. Mix the flour with water or milk or apply it directly on the skin (baby) oiling the baby. And, scrub very gently. Do it daily to see results. Do not miss out underarms and the pubic area too. You can mix the flour with turmeric and sandalwood powder.

  • Mix turmeric and milk and apply on the baby from top to bottom after the oiling session. Let it dry. Then, remove with a soft wash cloth dipped in milk. And, give a bath to the baby. You do not have to use any soap or cleanser after this procedure as milk cleanses the skin. Your baby would grow to have very little or no hair.
  • Instead of applying any chemical, apply pure aloevera gel on the complete body, scalp included. Or, you can even apply oil on their bodies. Try to keep babies away from the beauty products as much as possible. I would not even advice you to use the baby products. Natural is always the best.
A word of Caution: The skin of a newborn is extremely delicate. So, please be extra gentle while scrubbing with the flour. Otherwise, you can go for the next alternative. You can use the milk and turmeric alternative till the baby is 1 or 2 years old and then, switch to the scrubbing as their skin is better suited for scrubbing now. Many people use the chickpea (or Green gram dal) flour instead of a soap even after growing up. It keeps your skin smooth and glowing skin and complexion.

Well, being natural is the only way to keep the baby away from all the hazards of chemicals whether in the foods or cosmetics. So, parents have to make intelligent choices for their babies.

My baby girl has A LOT of upper lip hair. She is 11 months old. Will the besan and turmeric still help to get rid of the hair even though she is not a newborn? I just heard about this home remedy (if I had known before I would have definitely done this since she was a newborn). But I’m not sure if she is too big now or if the hairs are more stubborn by now. Thanks!
Also, can cooking turmeric be used?

    Hi

Your baby is just 11 months old so it is not late at all. You can start this remedy now and make it regular. You should notice a little difference in a month. And, make sure that your kid is not allergic to this remedy. Scrub very gently.
Cooking turmeric can be used but it will stain your fingers and nails so do this before you take a shower. If there is a stain left on your daughter, wash it with a soap or cleanser.

Hi Akshara. It’s quite common for babies skin to change color in the first few months of birth. Please do not bother much about it. It will eventually be fine once she grows.

yes, you should give baby an oil massage before using turmeric + milk. generally, a baby is given hot oil massage with mustard oil before bath and during bath, turmeric + milk is used to cleanse their skin.

hi Vijji. first of all, please do not worry about the skin color. the color of the skin for kids keeps on changing according to their growth. also, may be he is being exposed to too much of sun because of which it might have become dark. the only thing i would advise is to keep using sunnipindi which helps with maintaining clean skin and use skin-friendly products for your baby, that would be enough! please do let me know how it goes on 🙂

Hi vijji, kids below 5 years their skin keeps changing color so it is quite normal. Let them grow. Also, if the sunnipindi is suiting your kid, continue using it otherwise change it to regular besan. Also mix the sunnipindi with milk and see if it helps.

and, i would say don’t bother much with it now coz babies skin changes color soon. she is still growing so its ok. you can try all remedies after she is 5 or something. and, if you want, you can use sunnipindi to cleanse her skin instead or use natural handmade soaps 🙂

u can use coconut oil or olive oil immedidately after bathing.
I prefer to use my 2 yr old baby olive oil because i found it to be non stick and the body absorbs it very well. After 5 mins u can’t even notice the oil on skin 🙂
She had eczema(dry skin allergy) so doctor told to keep her skin moisturised.
      It worked well to her.

hey…it is absolutely fine! babies do keep on changing skin and eye color so don’t worry about it at all. i would also suggest not to do anything till she is 3-4 months old. the skin is extremely sensitive. any treatment should be started only when they are old enough!! and, let her first develop so what i would suggest is feed her properly. that’s the most important right now!

Same is my case. My daughter is 3 months old. She was born quiet fair but after 15 days she got slowly dark and now she is completely darker. My mother in law is having a dark skin so assuming that it must be genetical. Or my daughter was very hot bath by our maalish maid who came to give her bath. We are confused whether its her real colour or will it improve. Doctor has recommended Daffy soaf and cetaphil as cream. Pls suggest your valuable advice for this extremely dark skin that would could be the reasons for such drastic Change

hi Indu. first of all, your daughter is too young so what you need to focus on is using good products on her skin and giving proper nourishment. do not worry about her skin change as it is quite common for kids. it can be genetic or not, either case is resolved when they grow up. if the products given by doctor are gentle and not drying on her skin, you can continue using them. there is no issue 🙂 do not worry about it and take care of her health and keep an eye for any changes in her body just to be on the safe side. hope this helps 🙂

Hi, I really like this page, great job. So how long do you need to use the turmeric and milk on the skin until the hair reduction results are permanent ? or is this something you need to continue to do throughout life or the hair and pigment comes back. I am an Australian Mum and my daughter is 7 years old, she has a fair even complexion however her tiny fine blond hairs on her arms and legs are starting to look more obvious, still blond but getting bigger and longer, will the turmeric and milk work to remove and prevent her from having hairy arms and legs now and later in life, or will she always need to do this routine regularly to keep the hair away?, I want to do this for her as I have blond hairs on my arms too and growing up I noticed them a lot as they grew to be around a centimeter long, other’s don’t notice them as they are fine and blond but I was self conscious of them. Will this work on my arm hairs too, I am 35, I have very pale almost white transparent fair skin which is freckled on my face arms and chest from the Australian Sunshine when growing up, my daughter has more pale golden toned complexion due to her fathers genes and very few tiny pale speck freckles on her nose and checks only? I tried a rice flour, turmeric, avocado oil, honey and milk face mask yesterday and was absolutely astonished at it’s lightening effect on my facial pigmentation after just one application, I found it to be a very calming and gentle yet very effective exfoliating mask that reduced redness and puffiness, reduced pore size, smoothed the skin and evened out the tone and lightened pigmentation. Turmeric has me won over completely for this beauty mask aspect alone, so I am eager to hear how it works for hair reduction too? In this case, I plan on using this beauty mask I described above daily for a while to see how things go, should I be avoiding my eyebrows in case they disappear?

yes, it is a treatment which you have to do lifelong! pigmentation generally doesn’t come back but the hair does! it will work for your daughter but you have to do this daily for like around a year or two minimum and then at least repeat the treatment once a week. it might work out for you as well but can’t be too sure coz the roots become strong! no, its ok. the eyebrows are absolutely fine 🙂 yes, turmeric is very good but just make sure coz it does stain the skin yellow if used alone. i would suggest you to use it for a while and see the results 🙂

and last but not the least…dont be so concerned abt her complexion in this too early age..i can understand your feelings…yes one more thing….u can use forever living products like aloe propolis cream and aloe moisterising lotion..

hey…i would suggest you not to worry at all because the skin of babies keep on changing the color. so, let her grow up and the true color will show. just make sure you don’t keep her in direct sunlight! its nothing to do with genes at all. its just the distribution of melanin. and, yes, some parts of the body can get patchy as well but its too early to say anything in case of your daughter. reg. the hair, try using besan + turmeric + milk on her skin or this: https://swathyandsky.com/2010/03/use-sunnipindi-for-skin.html
      it should help with hair.

hey….first of all, don’t at all worry about the skin color coz babies keep on changing skin and eye colors till they grow up to 5. and, instead of being apprehensive about the insults, i would suggest you to teach her to accept herself as she is. i know this is unwanted advice but from my own experiences i can say this would serve her better in life 🙂
and, as to what to do for her is to use almond oil to moisturize her body and then keep her away from sun. also, i have heard that if orange peels mixed with milk are applied, it improves complexion of the babies 🙂

My baby is 19 months old. She also has the same problem that her skin is not in the same color. Most of the places her skin is very dak, jus like the pigmented skin. I m using besan & milk since a month, as ur advise, will use tumeric also. Sometimes i apply Saffron milk on her and after bath i apply Glycerine mixed with lime juice & rose water. Will these things be good to improve her skin complexion..?

actually pigmented skin can be due to a lot of reasons which are mostly internal apart from having melanin production!! yes they would improve the complexion but instead of trying so many things whihc are quite harsh on her skin, i would suggest you to stick to only one thing. mix besan + turmeric + milk and apply it to wash her body instead of using a soap. also, keep her away from sun. please don’t use lemon or any other fruit on her. they are very acidic.

      hey Kanika

please do not be bothered about her complexion. she is a baby right now. and, skin color keeps on changing till you are in the adult hood. just take care of her skin bu not exposing to unnecessary chemicals and all and that is it. do not do anything else. massage with oil if you wish but do it for her bones and all. everything else will settle down as she grows out of her teens 🙂

hey Kanika…stick to turmeric mixed with milk. that is enough. the main side-effect which i have started feeling is that it might not be really gentle on a baby’s skin so don’t scrub off. just wash it off after the mixture/paste dries off on the kid’s body 🙂

Hi, We have been advised to keep our new born baby in the sun everyday. When he was born, he was little pinkish. Now we see after 10-15 days, his skin tone has gone darker. I understand the genes part doing its bit. But does sun-bathing also reduces skin tone? If so is there a remedy for it?

yes, sun-bathing does reduce skin tone but babies must be sun-bathed to avoid some infections. so, don’t worry at all. it will all be fine. just don’t keep the baby outside in the noon sun. its too harsh. keep him/her in the morning sun like 6-8 or in evening after 5.

My baby is 4 months old. From her birth,we used coconut oil mixed with turmeric powder for massage before bath and bathed her with green gram flour and bengal gram flour. But,we used the same coconut oil to apply on her head as well.My concern now is,since the oil had turmeric powder in it which inhibits hair growth, whether this will make affect her hair growth. On birth, she did not have much hair and later, there was much hair fall when she was 3 months old. Then we realised and stopped turmeric and applied only coconut oil for head.A month passed now,her hair growth is less compared to some children. As people say, whatever done to the kid in first 3 months stays for life, please let me know if this will affect her hair growth permanently or will she develop some more hair on head as she grows. We applied turmeric and coconut oil on head initially as recommended by an elder person to remove lanugo hair present initially. Also, please suggest if this was right or wrong.many thanks.

well, i am guessing that turmeric should not hamper the head hair and may be she was born with less hair. so, don’t worry about it coz you really can not do much. her hair growth will be mainly known after you shave off her head once. and, its ok to apply coconut oil. don’t apply turmeric mixed oil over there as you are already doing. rest, just keep her physically active. i think it will solve itself as she grows 🙂

Hey. Do not worry about it at all. It’s absolutely fine and she will grow hair after the mundan ceremony or once she grows little. Observe till 2 years and them talk to a paediatric about it if she doesn’t grow hair even then. In the mean time, just give her regular body and hear massages given toothed babies!

Hi saachi. First of all, please do not mind my saying that teach her to accept the way she is otherwise she might develop a lot of inferiority complex!
Second, you can ask her to use besan +turmeric to cleanse her face. That helps remove tan and if she is willing, make her use sunscreen everyday. That would help avoid unnecessary exposure to Sun.
And I hope it’s not that big an issue and if you do like, please check out this post I wrote and let me know your opinions:

    Hi-
I have been searching for the baby scrub for so long. I had a teacher from South India, who was hairless and so was her daugter. She had mentioned a scrub her mom used while she was a baby to remove the hair roots. Thanks for posting this! My question is on the recipe:
    1) For the green dal + rice + turmeric mix, can you please tell me the quantity I need to mix for each?
    2) For the green dal mix above, when I mix it with milk to apply on my baby’s body, should it be a thick consistency or runny?
    3) For the green dal mix (mixed with milk), I will apply it after giving my baby a oil massage. Should i let it dry, or just start scrubbing the mix on her body, and then wash it with warm water? How long to scrub it for? Do I wet her with water before applying/scrubbing the mix?
    3) For the milk + turmeric mix that you mentioned in the fourth bullet point above, should the consistency for this be thick or runny? Do I let this sit on her body for sometime? If yes, how much time before I wipe it with the wash cloth?
Appreciate all your responses! thanks again for posting this.

      hey Neetu!
      1. i would say 65-25-10 for all 3 respectively. just make sure all the powders are very finely ground!!
      2. i would say keep the consistency enough runny that it is not sliding on the skin but it does shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes to dry!
      3. if you are applying it after an oil massage, apply the powder directly. do not mix it with milk or water. scrub it lightly on the skin on the oil only. and, do not wet her with water in that case. scrub it till the scrub rolls off the body. it will take max 5-10 minutes. just make sure it doesn’t hurt your baby.
      4. for the turmeric paste, the paste should be again enough to not be runny but not very thick. let it dry out on the skin and then scrub off very lightly. it will take 5-10 minutes at max again.
hope the answers were clear 🙂 let me know if there is some confusion.

Hi my son is 8 months old . He is having small white boils and redness like rashes on his cheeks & small white boils with redness on skin on some parts of legs.. We have tried flutivate cream , then atogla cream as suggested by doctor but still they are not going. this problem is since 2months already and not going away.our son has lot of hairs and long hairs could this be one of the reason? We are keeping the baby cool due to hot weather and not doing massage with oil and applying atogla cream on face suggested by doctor . Our doctor says this will go away with time and it could continue till 1 1/2 year or age too but we are worried. PLS HELP

For unwanted hair i have a very authentic home remedy.. Burn the Papers and grind them. Wax or Remove ur hair and fill the open pores on the opposite direction with this burnt paper mixer. You will see the result, Hairs will never ever come on that body part again. But Babies’ skin is always so delicate and sensitive, don’t try any remedies on their Baby Skin.. what i think is more important to increase their nutritional values that are as they grow up and ready to take solid foods other than breastfeeding i.e. after 06 give them milk, curd, vegetable and fruits juices, avoid cerelec, morinaga or readymade baby foods like this. make Sooji, Sagudaana, Kheer, etc and even make the vegetable soup, put chicken piece in it while cooking it, then put in feeder and give the child a healthy start and good immunity system. As far as baby girls are concerned avoid Farm Chicken as much as you can because it increases their hormones due to which they will get early mensturation and so it will effect their heights and growth.

    Hi swathi
My baby is 3 months old.
From the second month onwards we have been following the below procedure for bathing
    Massage with olive oil
Rub with wheat flour to get rid of hair
Apply masoor dal flour with milk to give bath to improve skin tone
I saw your suggestion to use almond oil instead of olive… Is that better for skin complexion
Also should I use just besan + turmeric + milk or turmeric + milk… Or can I just add some turmeric to the masoor dal and milk mixture
I want to improve the complexion of my baby and she has a lot of hair

hey, let her settle down for sometime and stick to one thing for now. i would simply suggest a homemade soap like ones from sos organics and do not bother now about her going dark. also, limit her exposure in sun so as to avoid the tanning part and if it is not giving rashes then you can use the besan + turmeric paste. do not use green gram. but if anything is giving her rashes, avoid it. also, use aloevera gel for her if available.

hey Ashima. you could use sunnipindi for her to remove the facial hair but she might also be allergic to it so check out if it suits her and then continue otherwise apply a paste of organic turmeric everyday on her face and just wash off with milk. do it with light hand and do not scrub if she develops rashes.

hi Payal. yes, it would definitely work on your 2 year old baby. just make sure she does not develop any rashes. if she develops rashes, you can simply mix organic turmeric and water and apply it on her face and wash off after it dries off without scrubbing. also, yes, it works on grown ups too but takes more time to show results and this must be done everyday for results.

hi Anik. haha, just keep them soft by applying ghee all the time. if the lips are soft, generally, they look pink and red only. but, overtime, the color would change because of the sun exposure and etc.

hi Rathi. honestly do not really bother about making her fair. keep oiling her skin and moisturising her and while bathing you can use besan or sunnipindi or any such thing which will clean her skin repeatedly. once she grows past 5, you can start using sunscreen.

hey. i would say do not worry much about her coloring because it does happen. also, take good care of her diet because sometimes iron and protein deficiency can cause issues with skin coloring. and, use sunnipindi on her everyday or simple besan instead of the baby soaps and all and massage her with a good oil like almond or apricot.

hi. my only advice is that please do not worry about their color. babies keep on changing their skin color. only thing i would advise is to keep their skin healthy and use only natural skin care products. do not try to exfoliate using any other thing than besan as their skin is very sensitive and do that also with a very light hand. also, avoid using coconut oil. instead use almond or apricot oil, which ever is available. and, do not worry, he is just too young for the skin to get any color. and, for lips, keep applying ghee to keep them moisturized. hope this helps 🙂 do let me know how it goes!!

Hi i’m Sophia’..I am only 23 years old and my face is prone to black heads, white heads and pimples..when i was younger i dont have any problem at all when it comes to pimples. Two years ago i started using oseur pearl cream i dont see any problem at all at first it makes my skin whiter, smoother and free from ances but later on last couples of months ago i had stop using it. I had noticed that i had a white heads, black heads and pimples and i decided to use it again but after a month of using it there is no improvement at all..i decided to stop using it and i had research that tomato scrub is effective. I steamed my face first before applying the tomato juice with sugar on my face and rinse it. I do this twice a week..after two weeks of using it i dont see any improvement at all. Every morning and before i go to sleep i wash my face with (safeguard)soap and water after that, i use eskinol. Can you give me an advice pls…i really need your help…

hi Sophia. first of all, i guess your pimples issue is due to hormonal changes. so, try to do a body detox first. drink a glass of lemon water every morning. it really helps in cleansing the body. also, try using ginger juice or onion juice on the pimples. they might help. also, get a salicylic acid face wash from any pharmacy. it does help with pimples. hope this helps 🙂

hi Rekha. honestly, the only thing I would suggest is that please do not be worried at all about the skin color because it is normal for children. also, for the babye hairs and complexion, you can use sunnipindi as it helps with both of them. rest you can moisturise using a organic oil like almond or coconut. that should be enough.

My baby girl is 2 years old and still has hair on her face. So thinking of applying besan+ tumeric mix.
    1. For the besan+ tumeric mix can u please tell me the quantity I need to mix?
    2. Should I let it dry or just start scrubbing the mix on her body & then wash it with warm water? How long to scrub it?
    3. How long do you need to use the besan+tumeric mix to get results & how often?
    4. Are the results permanent or is this something you need to continue to do throughout the life or hair comes back?

hey. answering in the same order 🙂
      1. 4/5th cup of besan + 1/5th cup of turmeric. use it till it lasts and then mix a fresh one!
      2. apply the paste on the body, let it dry till its just damp and not completely dry because if it is completely dry, it does hurt a lot more!! do not actually scrub but remove it by scrubbing in the opposite direction of hair growth, just like waxing. since it is almost dry, it will roll off her body. scrub / remove till the entire body is clean and then follow with warm water. make sure it is just lukewarm.
      3. the problem with this treatment is that you have to use it for ever!! so, try using it continuously for a month and then reduce the frequency to alternate days and so on.
      4. generally it is said that if you continue to do it in the childhood, the growth is less when the kid grows but i would say it has to be done continuously. like, doing this remedy once a week at least once the kid grows up. but, remember that hair growth really depends on the hormonal changes also. so, that can come back!!

hope this helps 🙂 do let me know if you have more questions!!

      hi Anu.
first the massage oil, you can use sesame oil which is the ayurvedically prescribed oil for any one! but, make sure not to use it in extreme summers as it produces a lot of heat. at that time you can alternate with coconut or almond oil.
second, for the hairs, you should try out the sunnipindi routine for your baby.
      https://swathyandsky.com/2010/03/use-sunnipindi-for-skin.html

i assume that you massage your baby with oil before bath. so, after the oiling session, take the powder and rub it on her skin just like you would rub a soap. this would remove the oil as well as cleanse her skin. do this daily and you should see difference after one month. yes, this remedy has to be done everyday which is why it can be used instead of the soap.

hope this helps 🙂 do let me know how it went for you!

hi. this is absolutely fine. you really do not have to worry about her skin color.
also, you can try using this homemade soap instead. it will keep her skin clean and remove the sun tan gradually.

hey Reena. i gave a link up there in my earlier comment. it is actually a beauty secret or a homemade soap used for the babies which also helps removing the facial hair from their body. you can use it for both your kids. it can be used at any age and it is just as effective anytime!!

the soap is made up of mung dal and rice flour and turmeric and you can add in besan as well. it is extremely effective but you will have to keep using it daily. it is a slow process to get rid of excess hair and you really need not worry. just follow this routine daily.

            Hi Swati

I tried the besan+green gram dal+ turmeric paste combination for my 7 month old baby to remove excess hair on his upper lip, face and body as a scrub after massaging him with coconut oil however he is getting red rashes all over his body even if i just apply this paste before washing without scrubbing and washing it off immediately.

I tried just green gram dal & turmeric and the result is the same. Is this expected on all babies and will this rash go away after continuos use of this scrub or is it an allergic reaction that he is developing to this scrub?

hi Kirti. it is quite common for skin to become dark due to friction. it happens in adults also so do not worry about it. it would get better once she starts standing up!! also, moisturize her skin all the time so that it does not get dry and leathery.
reg. the hairs, please use this mixture:

hi Swati, first of all thanks for this blog. It’s been very insightful. My son is now about 4.5 mths and he has started to have some rashes on his body and face. He puts his hand in his mouth and when he’s tired rubs his face all over causing redness. His head, body and face is rather dry now. It hurts me to see him like that as he has started to scratch his head and body. I am thinking of using your tip of using coconut oil to massage him.
    1. Will using mung dal flour with turmeric and milk help his body to moisturize and remove the rashes? If not what can I use?
    2. What can I use to clean his face? do i just use the mung dal flour or use it with milk and turmeric?
    3. Please tell me what can I use to wash his head instead of soap.
    Thank you very much 🙂

    Hi Swati,
Firstly thanks for such a informative blog.
My son is 4 and half months. He’s started getting facial and body rash recently. He has rather dry skin. Because he rubs his hands on his face and head his face has rash. I am going to try to massage him in coconut oil as mentioned in your blog. Hopefully that helps to nourish his body. I have few questions, Swati. Thank you in advance for your reply.

    1. Can I use mung dal mixed with turmeric and milk to over his body during bath after coconut oil massage? or is there anything else I can do to nourish his body and reduce the rashes?
    2. What can use for his head instead of shampoo? his scalp is quite dry and he scratches it often 🙁 hurts me to see him in pain when he cant communicate his needs)
    3. What can i use to wash his face and what can I apply to his face after washing his face to keep it soft and supple?

    thank you Swati.

First tym i applied n had kept to 5 minutes she strtd crying i could feel that she was psinfull as her skin was streching because of dry besan. hi Chandrima. first of all, do not worry about her complexion. it will get better with age and for kids, it keeps on changing. what you can instead focus on is finding a good face wash and body wash for her which does not dry out her skin. also, she needs lotion and oil both to take care of the dryness so apply a thin layer of oil just right after shower when her skin is still wet and then seal with a body lotion. and, regarding her hair, do not bother with DIY’s just yet. she is too young so just use good products on hair and oil her hair before you shampoo it. I would suggest Kama for face and body wash and body oil, st. Ives or jergens or nivea for body lotion and deFabulous for shampoo – conditioner duo. hope this helps 🙂

hi Priya. no it is other way round. first oil massage and then the body pack before bath. after bath also you can do the oil massage. but if you are going to use sunnipindi or besan for baby, oil massage before that is must as it is harsh for baby’s skin.
