We are already in the middle of winter and my skin is showing definitive signs of dryness, Hyderabad being even more dry. I thought it would be a good time to talk about winter skin care routine. So, let us start.
Winter Skin Care Tip #1 – Take Care of your exfoliation
Winters is all about more of dead and dull skin. It is time to move away from granular or physical scrubs. And, if you are a fan of sugar, I really hope you are not using the granulated one. It is just too harsh for skin. You must get the organic and least processed sugar versions even for consumption or at least powder the one in your kitchen. Or, best, pick up a few sachets of Demerara or brown sugar when you are at a coffee shop.
Another great way to exfoliate your skin is the good old OCM method. Nothing is better than oil to remove your dead skin and it is moisturizing it at the same time. Make sure you have castor oil in the mix as that is one powerful cleansing oil but way too strong to be used alone. Also, exfoliate more frequently to combat dull skin. If you have exfoliation twice a week in your winter skin care routine, make it thrice in 10 days.
Winter Skin Care Tip #2 – Moisturize in the shower or when you are slick wet
This is the season for my body butters and some of them are way too thick to spread easily on dry skin. So, what am I doing? Smoothing it out on literally wet skin. Within the shower is best but then you need to dab a bit with the towel.
The warmth and water helps make the body butter pliable and go smoothly over the skin. Application is messy if you are doing on totally wet skin but if you can get through it, you just do not need anything else the entire day. And, take care you do not catch cold while you are at it.
Winter Skin Care Tip #3 – Olive Oil
Okay, this one is pretty recent. If you have followed my blog over the years, I am not a fan of olive oil and I do not use it for my body or hair. But, this one changed my opinion. May be it is all about quality.
My doctor said I should use olive oil for pigmentation. Apparently, according to him, it is the only oil which helps with pigmentation issues. Sounds really interesting. So, I thought I would give it a try and decanted a bit of my cold pressed EVOO into a small tub.
When I applied it, voila! I applied the oil only my arms when I was slick with water after shower and the oil just disappeared. No greasiness and no stickiness and no oiliness. In fact, I did apply another layer after like 10-15 minutes and that also disappeared. You can guess how much of a dry skin I have but it was amazing to use olive oil.
I got a bit of dry patch around my mouth for which I again used this. Just dabbed very little of oil and it was gone. Just in one night. It has been only 2 days since I am using it but the experience is amazing. If it does help with my pigmentation, I shall definitely let you know but for now I would say if you also suffer from dry patches, putting olive oil in the list of your winter face care tips will be really helpful.
But, make sure you buy a really good quality olive oil otherwise you will just end up hating olive oil like me. It should be extra virgin and cold pressed and bottled in dark glass. And, of course, I am talking about the cooking range.
Winter Skin Care Tip #4 – Sunscreen
One of the mantras of winter skin care is being diligent with sunscreen. I am back with a vengeance with the usage of sunscreen. Every morning I apply a good amount of the product depending on my routine for the day and climate. It is pretty sunny in the day even though the weather has cooled down decently. I do couple my sunscreen with vitamin C serum for added protection.
Winter Skin Care Tip #5 – Wipe the phone with anti-bacterial solution
This is not exactly a winter skin care tip though and is valid through all seasons. I take a cloth, pour a lot of sanitizer on it and wipe off my phone thoroughly with it getting every groove and curve clean. It removes all the sunscreen and dirt which has accumulated on the screen in the day.

Hi Swati,
I travel a lot and I’ve lived in countries with a cold climate for most of my life. One of the key things for me is to exfoliate too to take off any dull and dead skin cells. But I always use a face or body brush to exfoliate and use a general purpose moisturizer after the shower.
Have you found there to be a benefit in using natural (granular) exfoliation methods?
