How to take care of dry and damaged hands?

My Hand Care Arsenal

Have you ever observed how doing anything can damage our hands? Right from doing chores around the house to excessive water exposure to round the clock typing from mobiles to laptops. All result in the same – dry and damaged hands. And, they get worse if you are the one handling the menial chores of your house from dusting to washing utensils to laundry with all detergents being equally harsh. Makes sense to go eco-friendly, no? Or, I would rather call it skin-friendly!

One day while doing my household work, one of my fingers started bleeding. That was when I realized how cruelly I was ignoring to take care of my dry and damaged hands. Adding to that is the bad habit of washing my hands frequently. There is a specific term for it but let me just say this habit is categorized under Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. So, before you go down the same road I did, I would plead the case of your finger tips with you.

Exfoliate your dry and damaged hands with sugar twice to thrice a week. Use the squeezed lemon, if available. Nothing works better.

Excess Water Exposure

Do not wet your hands too much. More your hands get wet, the drier they become. And, we are not even talking about the dish washing liquids or hand wash which are way too harsh on your skin.

Keep Moisturizers Handy

Spread bottles of pump moisturizer everywhere in your home right from sinks to bed side tables. Sometimes we are just too lazy or too much in rush to use the hand creams which come in tubes. They have to be unscrewed, squeezed out and capped back on before applying the cream which seems like a chore. Instead, a pump makes it easy to take the moisturizer on the go. Ease of access is the keyword here.

Get Gloved

Do your fingers a favor and buy a set of rubber gloves. Wear them as well. Yes, one of my friend owns a pair but doesn’t use them while doing the chores. No point, right? The rubber gloves might not prevent your hands from getting wet but they sure will keep the soap and dust away so silver lining!

Do Not Sanitize

Do not use sanitizer unless you HAVE to. Sanitizers, effective or not, have minimum of 35% alcohol. Using them too often causes dryness and unless you are in the medical profession or the beauty service industry (being a blogger or makeup enthusiast is not qualifying you into the beauty industry so keep sanitizers away from your vanity area), you do not really need one. Keep them handy for travels when you can not get water and soap but avoid on a day to day basis.

Study Table also needs a Vanity Case

Keep a moisturizer or hand cream right beside your laptop or work table. The moment you feel the hand is drying off, go ahead and smear some. And, keep smearing if you are busy typing vigorously. Also, do not forget lip balm and face moisturizers along with the hand cream. Keep your skin and lips from getting dried up while you are busy working.

Use heavy hand creams at night. If possible, top up with a heavy layer of vaseline and wear gloves at night at least till your dry and damaged hands get a little better. Thereafter, take regular care. Whatever you do, make a cardinal rule not to ignore the state of your hands. Remember that they can betray your age before your face.

How do you take care of your hands? Do they get dry and damaged too? Which products do you love using for them?
