Updated from 19th September, 2015. After a long long time, I am back with a skin care post. Yea!! I do have a lot of good news in my kitty but I shall go slow this time. I do not want to overwhelm myself 😀 So, yeah, lets go back to do you really wash your face in the morning or more correctly does your face need a wash in the morning?
Well, I am sure you obviously wash it! You would rather ask me if I had gone mad!!
Anyways, you remember the huge and awesome haul I shared with you a few weeks back from my Malaysia trip 🙂 I am still so excited about it that I am not able to decide what to use and when? Just yesterday, I tried out the SKII facial treatment mask (best part of a sheet mask is you do not have to wash your face later) and boy they are expensive as hell!!! So, was it worth it? No, I do not know. I still have 5 more and I would like to do a detailed review. Anyways, why am I even talking about masks?
Night Time Skin Care Routine
Yeah, right, I was talking about washing face in the morning. Now, let me just go back a little and talk about your night time skin care routine. So, what exactly do you do? Cleanse off your makeup, wash your face, tone it (optional) and moisturize. So, are you one who just prefers a single layer of one product or go with multiple products. Whatever the case be, you do cleanse your face properly at night, right? Then the question arises that what do you do in the morning?
You really do not have to wash your face in the morning but you need to clean the skin to get rid of all the dead skin cells and previous night skin care residue.
How to Wash Your Face in the Morning?
Do you use a face wash? Or, just simply slap some ice cold water to wake up and perk your skin? Or, you have a separate day and night cleanser so that your morning routine is simpler than at night?
Well, the thing is I have read a lot on this topic and I found out that you really do not have to wash your face in the morning but you need to clean the skin to get rid of all the dead skin cells and previous night skin care residue. At night, your skin is not really exposed to any sort of dirt and pollution. And, hopefully, you do keep changing your bed clothes twice to thrice a week which makes them fresh for sleep always. So, using plain water splash is also enough to get your skin clean.
Now, you have many doubts in your mind, I am sure!
Is Plain Water enough to Wash Your Face?
For oily skinned girls, plain water is definitely not enough. I would suggest to get a gel-based cleanser with 1-2% salicylic acid and use it at least once a day. In the morning, you can definitely use something less concentrated to wash your face.
You would ask me what about the skin rejuvenation which takes place at night and all the oil which is secreted and the bacteria?
For the starters, your dead skin gets washed off with water and your cleanser does not really get rid of the bacteria unless it is alcohol concentrate. So, we are left with oil secretion. That is a real problem for oily skin girls and has to be dealt with in a firm manner.
The answer is that you really need to change the products which you are using. You might not be using the correct set of products according to your skin type. And, in the morning, you can go for the face wash alternatives which I will talk about now.
We come to the most exciting part of the post now 🙂 So, what all can you use to wash your face in the morning? And, improve your skin as well.
So, What are the Alternatives to the face wash?
Honey
Yup, just take a big dollop, massage in between your palms to warm it up and apply on the face, massage just like you would do with a face cleanser and keep for a minute or two or wash off immediately. Voila, your skin is clean and you have nourished it as well. Btw, do the same for your neck and décolletage.
Honey is anti-bacterial and has properties which cleanse off the dead skin and make the skin clean so you really do not have to worry. Also, it is a great alternative for oily skin gals as well. Manuka honey is touted to be even better for skin but then it is not available everywhere!
The Regular Chickpea or Besan
No, do not mix with milk. Milk might leave a residue and make your skin creamy and stinky. And, dairy products are a definite NO for oily skin.
Just mix it with plain water or with floral water and wash off. It is a proven cleanser and a great one at that! You can use it as a face mask as well at the same time.
Face Masks!
This was one trick I wanted to share with you. I have so many face masks just lying all over the house and now I have found one of the most effective ways to use them! Now, I have clay based face masks. So, clay is great at absorbing the oils and toxins from the skin so makes for a great face wash in the morning. So, what do I do?
I just take a huge dollop of mask and smooth it over my entire face and neck and décolletage. If I have time, I let it stay for 10 minutes otherwise just a minuted or two would do. You can also wait till the entire mask dries off. And, once you wash off with water, your face is clean, voila!
Now, clay based face masks are great for oily skin gals as well. In fact, you can make your own cleansers by mixing multani mitti with water or floral toners. And, if you do have dry skin, you can mix with honey. But, this trick would NOT work with creamy masks. Presently, I have Vaadi Herbals insta glow and chandan face masks and TBS corn exfoliating mask. Since the TBS mask is exfoliating as well, I would use it only once a week.
Steam
Oh yes! This is for gals who have sinus problems. If you do take steam in the morning to clear your nasal passages, remember that a 2 minute steam for your face also removes all the build-up and dead skin cells so a splash with cold water would be just enough. But, remember that you must NOT use vaporizer every single day as it is quite drying for the skin. And, using steam to wash your face is not exactly a very great idea either.
Now, it is your turn …
So, this was from my side. Over to you! How do you treat your skin in the morning? Do you use your regular face wash or do something else to wash your face? Do share your routine as well!! I am all ears. And, yes, do not forget to mention the products you use!

You spoke my mind! I have stopped using cleansers in the morning for a long time. I use water, face masks or cetaphil. My skin has now got use it. That also reduced my dependence on creams.

Obviously we all need to look after our skin because only a healthy skin speaks volumes about our health. This post will certainly help us to use the right face washes and packs to gently cleanse and exfoliate our skin from dead skin cells, dirt, toxins and impuritues

Hi Swati,
I recently found your blog and I love it. I like your style of writing and the common sense approach to beauty.
This post is exactly what I do. I just use plain cool water to wash my face and it cleans my face beautifully ( I have a combination skin). I use ubtan to wash my face in the evening . Ever since I started this regime my face skin has got smoother and more radiant.
Keep up the good work.

Well, it usually with plain room temperature water then I rub some mild cleanser and wipe it with a face cloth instead of splashing with water, this gives my skin a good cleaning from the night creams, toner, eye cream etc. It worked wonders to my skin. However I would like to give a try to herbal masks and other homemade options sometimes, I believe they give a pampering feel as well.
thanks for the wonderful post, it gave me a fresh perspective to try on.

I love using powder cleansers in the morning. I sometimes make my own and sometimes I use store bought ones like the one from Kama Ayurveda. They feel extra refreshing to use during the day.
Swati says
Hi Sangeeta. I use the homemade sunnipindi or the besan and moong dal powder. did not buy ones from kama or any yet other than what I got for reviews but yes some of the local shop products sound really tempting. this reminds me of a shop near to my in laws place which carries very high quality products here in hyderabad and apparently they are pure. btw, this time when I was using the face powder made of besan and moong dal, I mixed in a bit of clay as well. It is definitely nice and actually good at controlling oil!
