So, I was applying Lush Caca last Saturday when I had a chat with my friend. As I have mentioned earlier as well that to get color from Lush Cacas, one has to keep it for like 4-8 hours and that too it doesn’t come in one application! One HAS to apply it 2-3 times in a row to color the hair which lasts for 2-3 months.
Now that I have been smitten with chestnut color since long, I really wanted to follow the coloring process like my earlier attempt with the Cacas. But, this time my friend intervened and gave me an advise that henna, howsoever good it might be, should not be applied on hair regularly!
Henna is extremely drying for hair and if applied often or kept for long time on the hair, makes the hair brittle and thins it and makes it break easily!! She says to get the color, henna should not be kept on hair for more than three hours and there should be a gap of at least 2 weeks in the applications!
Well, hearing this, I decidedly sobered down on the thought of applying Cacas in a row and waited for 2 weeks to passby for the second application and this Saturday, I kept henna only for 4 hours. Yes, a delay of 1 hour due to household chores and my reluctance to wash it off early!
But, there is an upside to it. Henna color keeps on building in the hair for a good number of 3 days after the application even if you wash the hair on alternate days. This at least holds true for Lush cacas. Don’t know about regular henna, though!
Anyways, what do you think? How often should henna be applied and for how long?

Hey Swati, I am a fan of henna and I apply it on regular basis. When I say regular it means either 15 days or a month. I have healthy hair, the only problem is occasional hair fall which is due to changing seasons, climate or shampoo change.
I have heard this a lot that henna makes hair dry. It’s true but if it can be moisturizing too if you mix a right proportion of henna and other ingredients. I would to conclude by saying that nothing can replace a natural solution to any problem.
Hope this helps.

Hi Swati,
I was an ardent fan of natural henna in the past few years and then stopped as it was making my hair dry and drier :(I used to apply every month . Some say you should use oil to protect the hair from dryness ,some others say henna should be used on dry hair w/o any oil , anywhich ways henna didnt work for me .. If you like to henna your hair , make sure you oil and moisturise your hair to protect it from being brittle 🙂

I keep my hair very short as I am a 61 year old male, I mix my henna every 15 days to cover 50% grey on my sides, I mix henna with tea let it set for 12 hours, then I add I/2 tsp olive oil, 1/2 teaspoon of mustard oil, and 1 tsp of plain yogurt, then mix with indigo and salt! I leave on 2 hours, wash out with VO5 conditioner, always works. I also take 6 ounces of mustard oil, and 50 grams of henna in an old pot heat the mustard oil, throw in the henna, cook for 10 minutes on low heat to the henna is dark red, let cool and strain, keep in a jar! I apply this 2 times a week , for 1 hour before I shampoo, and it has helped my hair stay moist, and my hair thicker, and more manageable!
Nirupama says
Wow!!! The usage of mustard oil is so well mentioned.
Thank you!! 🙂

Hello Swati,
I have been using henna now for like two months and I am quite liking it because it makes my hair very soft and silky. I wanted to know is it good if I apply henna once in every week? Will it be good for my hair or will it make my hair ultra thin and easily breakable.
P.S. :- My hair is really thin and damaged due to dust and heat. I face hairfall in every wash… 🙁
Ccami Noza says
Hi Sangeeta you can use henna once a week if your scalp is oily or do scalp massage with amla oil for 5 min and apply henna for your hair.

Hi Swati!
I have been using 100% pure henna for 8 months and my hair never got dry. I apply it every 3 months. I mix henna with hibiscus tea (not too concentrated), wait for about 10-15 hours, apply it to clean humid hair, put a plastic bag or something like that to avoid loss of moisture and wait for 4 hours. Then, I wash it and use a hair conditioner without silicons and paraffin. My hair is very healthy, soft and it grows faster than before!
Swati says
hi Paola. exactly! since you prevent the loss of moisture using the cling wrap or a shower cap, it works. but, some do not use them to prevent the loss of moisture and then henna gets really hard set on the hair and becomes very difficult to remove from hair as well. otherwise, it makes the dry hair even more drier. thanks for sharing your routine 🙂

I am using henna since past couple of years almost each week. Mix henna with water and apply on scalp and hair and keep for as long as you can starting from 2 hours till 8 – 10 hours. Wash with water . Once its dry ( or at least semi dry ) apply any oil of your choice and keep for a few hours . Then wash it with any shampoo. This way the colour remains longer and hair gets more healthy .

I am henna fan. Simply because my hair looks and feels better when I dye it with all natural henna. Plus the all natural henna is safe for your hair!! I am huge fan of the reddish orange color I get from my henna!! and touch ups are great in between all over henna. I mix mine with different ingrientients. Sometimes a bit of coffee, coconut milk, little lemon juice, sometimes beet juice,

Henna is considered a protein treatment and any protein treatment should be rinsed and immediately followed by a moisturising treatment to maintain the balance and also to keep the hair hydrated and restore the moisture lost…i do henna gloss treatments which involve mixing the henna with a conditioner and avocado and almond oil and aloe vera gel and leaving on for 30minutes…the results are glorious!!

I have been using heena 100% natural for about 2 yrs now. My hair has grown tremendously. Using twice a month. But I do mix natural oils and conditioner with my heena.
Swati says
wow! should try it out!!
Tracy says
Like Tarkecia, I also use henna mixed with my favorite conditioner. This method has strengthened my hair and has reduced shedding. My hair is soft and shiny.. I’ve been doing this method for three months and I love the results. I have seen 3.5 inches of growth where I would only get this amount of growth in one year!
Swati says
Wow, Tracy. That is really good amount of growth. I should also give this a try then!

Swati I am a 63 year old male with short graying hair. I use the Nupur Henna to cover my gray for 2 hours, then shampoo it out! It is called filling, sort of a base. It makes my hair a orange red, later I mix 1 part of Rainbow Henna Chestnut Brown, 1 part Dark Brown with water, and leave on for 3 hours, and rinse out with conditioner. I makes my hair a nice brunette, color with highlights, where the hair is gray. I love Nupur for a good general henna, because it has all the herbs used in Asian Herbal Hair Coloring!

Should the conditioner & essential oils be mixed & soaked overnight before applying? How long to leave it on hair before washing?
Angela says
How do you mix henna with conditioner and apply? How long do you leave it on? I use Morrocco Method Henna. I don’t think I could do this. I assume if you have to leave it on clean hair with not chemicals or hair products… then how is it okay to use conditioner? Im confused.
