Home Remedies for Hair Growth {DIY}

Swathy · April 11, 2012 · 62 Comments

Yesterday, I talked about some of the tips to start taking care of your hair. And, I had said that I shall share some of the home remedies which have helped my hair tremendously in certain number of years. So, lets start on.

Fenugreek Seeds

Yes, the methi or fenugreek seeds about which I talked almost when I started my blog. That was one remedy which helped my hair fall and I guess it did help in a little in improving the hair texture but since I am so lazy, I had discontinued the remedy. I guess its time to start again!!

Egg
As always, I swear by this remedy. Applying egg on my hair weekly has helped my hair a lot and if not in hair growth, it has definitely helped to keep my hair soft, silky and shiny and strong too. But, the downside of the remedy is the smell which even I can’t bear so I have not used egg on my hair since quite long.
Yogurt
This was advised to me by one of my friends who was advised by an acquaintance. The said acquaintance used to douse her hair in yogurt everyday and wash it off (not shampoo but only plain water rinse) and used to shampoo her hair once a week. This was the routine in vacations but I do admit that she must have smelt bad!!! But, the remedy and the hard work paid off and her tresses were very beautiful and long.
Well, I did use the remedy and not quite in the same way but I used to keep curd / yogurt in my hair for 1-4 hours a stretch and wash it off with a shampoo. Over a period of time, my hair texture did improve a lot. And, here I am guessing, that it did improve my hair volume too. But, I am not quite sure on that count.

Onion Juice

This is something I swear by again and it is one of the top rated of my posts in all time. I know!!! And, yes, onion juice helps a lot in hair growth itself. But, yes, it gives a very foul smell which is why I get discouraged to use the remedy but the results are too obvious.
The reason why onion works is because of its richness in sulphur, one of the main minerals required for hair growth.  don’t know if it will cover a bald spot but yes, it will definitely revive the hair follicles if they have been dormant too long. A very difficult remedy to use, though 🙁
Tomato
Again, one of my few first posts on the blog, it had helped to restore my sunburnt and extremely damaged hair to a decent condition. Tomato gives a lot of shine to the hair and also helps with dandruff as it is a little acidic but not as acidic as lemon to leave the hair entirely dry!!!
These are the remedies which have helped my hair a lot overtime.

Hi swati, very informative article 🙂 keep the good work on .I have tried all above tips (except onions) successfully,.I would like to add some of my findings about importance of using right hair accoseries .So whenever you buy any hair clips/clutcher/jaw clips check them for smooth edge,or else they will snag the hair causing sever damage eventualy.Metal clips are more damaging than plastic ones.if you have plastic clips,Buffing the edges with sand paper is a good way to smooth if there is any uneven edge.Likewise, always use elastic bands wrapped in cloths(scrunchis are good opiton).Naked elastic will keep rubbing on hair causing split ends and hair may get tangled on it.Hair sticks are ideal for styling hair in a safe way.Oh,one more thing keeping hair in updo is good to prevent damage caused when hair is rubbed on our cloths. But let hair down and keep it natural some times.

hey Monali…yes, this is very true 🙂 I always try to look for clips with blunt edges and its really hard to find!!! I like using rubber bands – the thicker ones I don’t know what they are called but the ones which comes in all sizes and colors and have elastics built inside them..such a horrible way of describing something and I don’t even know if you understood what I meant 😀 yeah, hair should kept up but also let down!!! its actually a balance of lot of things 🙂

Hey swati,i think i know what you are saying about, here that kind of elastic band is sold in a packet of 12 or you can buy them individually too. They are cheap and easy to style with.more over,i like to cordinate their color with my outfit,i know it sounds girlish. But i love it so much that i don’t care whatever fashion say about that ;D

yes, they are the ones I am talking about 😀 yeah you can color co-ordinate and they are easy and don’t snag in the hair too!!! I generally go for black and often don’t have colors to go with my outfit 😀 I have seen scrunchies in pantaloons and other stores and each comes for around 50 bucks and I am like should I buy or not??? and, then, when I think of these hair bands, I am like I already have safe option so why not waste the money on something good 😀 I already have hair bands from accessorize on my list and last time I checked they cost 400!!! but, they don’t have any teeth or anything and don’t snag on the hair and hurt the head…I really want such a hair band so I shall rather go for that…just looking out for a cheaper option!!!

ya,it seems like you have enough hair accessories,no need to spend more on them.Hair bands are a good and fashionable option,so go for them.Mostly we endup buying way too many thing than we need or actually can use 🙂 what can we do,its very hard to deny the temption of buying new goodies, whether we need it or not 😉 As with my case,i always buy too many and eventually end up donating them(most are usually unused or very little used).Since i have started growing hair,i am getting too much hair thins as gifts from friend and family members as encouragement.I think someday i will be able to open my own shop out of these ;D

    Hey Swathi,
have been doing all kinda research for hairfall. Have been noticing severe hairloss for the past year or two. keep trying all kinda natural remedies to get rid of hairfall. Havent succeeded, have started applying onion paste to my scalp for the past 1 week, but i think it would take some time to get rid of hairfall. I notice hairfall in my pillows, wen i comb my hair wen i massage my scalp with oil or onion juice, wen i wash my hair. So am bit pissed off from this situation. Been to Batras clinic they said starting stage of sebhorric dermatitis and very sensitive scalp with dandruff, have been applying medications for a month almost, but dont see any kinda results, Hope this natural remedy helps me get rid off this terrific mood.Plz keep me adviced. Thank u swathi in advance.

    Hi Swathi,
its too hard for me to analyse what type of hair i have, bcoz 2 hrs after shampooing i can see my shiny scalp and i have been loosing lots of hair almost 100 hair strands a day. Excessive sebum secretion which is making my scalp too oily is because i have a dry scalp? also i think i have dandruff, it doesnt fallout on the shirt collars, but wen hair falls out, i am noticing something stuck to the hair.
So where i should start from? which shampoo i should choose? to start with should reduce the sebum secretion by choosing the appropriate shampoo? plz guide me with your experience. Am grateful to u. Because this hair fallout makes me think always of going bald which in turn is making me more depressed.

    dear swathi,

I am satyanarayana, thank you for the nice tips, every day i am losing at least 50 to 100 hair while rinsing with oil(arnica, homeopathy oil)as well as while bathing(using arnica shampoo). I am consuming tablets(homeopathy) as to stop the itching and dandruff on my head. Please, please tell me a solution for this problem. Except for that methi and egg i didn’t try the remaining ones, should i have to drink the onion juice or apply it on the hair, which is better, can i do this once or twice a week.

Give me your best suggestion, i will follow what ever you say. Please get rid of this hair fall.
    thank you in advance.

guess arnica things are not suiting you. 50-100 are not exactly a hair fall. everyday, its normal for 150 hairs to fall off. i’m pretty sure you can’t drink onion juice. you can eat onions. apply onion juice on head but its not exactly a severe problem.

see hair growth depends on number of factors…these will help your hair only externally but are you eating well??? and, are you going through a lot of stress or anything of such issues or any hormonal issues. all these things culminate into hair fall…i would suggest you to consult a dermatologist and i would also suggest you to continue all these treatments for at least 6 months!!

yes, it takes time to show results so i would suggest you to continue the routine but also improve your diet. include nuts and eggs and try this:

Then I encountered ur post and it asked to mix the onion juice with oil. I am really confused. My main motive is to thicken my hair as they are so thin and also very less dense. you can use rum but alcohol in any form is very drying for the hair so use it sparingly like once a month or even less, just for occasions. i would suggest you to apply onion juice on oiled hair using cotton ball.
