summer body care
It’s Summer Time!
Last Updated: 4th May, 2015

So, it is two months into summer here. Hyderabad is getting unbearably hot!Β And, I had started to get horrible headaches everyday. That was one of the reasons I was not very active in the past two weeks.

This time Hyderabad is quite unpredictable. As soon as it gets too hot, it is raining over here and the weather is cooling down. And, since I am not working or having to travel 50 kms everyday back and forth from the office like I did last year, life is easier. But, then, I have to live with sun beating down on me on my top floor apartment!!

It does get pretty suffocating some times but right now I am enjoying the breeze as I am typing this out. It is relatively good today. Did I ever tell you that I live the most spacious apartment? Well, it is me and Mr. P and our 2400sqft area with two huge balconies which can be converted into sit outs. I know it is crazy to have such big house for just the two of us but then I really do not know what to say in my defence. Let me just say I love it and enjoy it πŸ™‚

Oh yes, back to the post. Even though I have not had much of commute, last few weeks have been entirely opposite. I had to get some passport stuff done for which we literally have been on our feet every single day for the last two weeks.

Result. Spending loads of time travelling on the bike uncovered in the midday sun. Oh yes, I am tanned like hell but I am talking here of extreme dehydration! And then, I had to find a solution for it because my energy was literally being sucked out by sun! Oh, do you also remember that glucose ad in which sun drinks a boy’s energy using the straw? It was an amazing concept! Yes, we do have straws attached to our head and can hear the sucking sounds made by the sun while the energy drains out from the body leaving us limp and lethargic.

And, finally, yesterday Mr. P’s stomach gave way and succumbed to food poisoning or diarrhoea with so many weather fluctuations and eating outside and not maintaining a routine.

So, I did thought updating this post with what tricks I am using this time to keep myself all ready for this summer. Since I am most of the time at home, the point of severe dehydration is out of the scenario.

I am no longer following these tips but they are definitely helpful for anyone who commutes and spends time outside the house. I would suggest carrying the following juices / liquids from your house but even if not, just make sure you get the fresh stuff without much additives.

Curd/Buttermilk/Yogurt
Every night I save a glass of curd in fridge and pour it into a bottle in the morning, add just a bit of water and keep on sipping it till the end of the day. No doubt, this has worked like a charm.

Curd is great at regulating the body temperature. But, it is always better to have it in the buttermilk format instead of the full-of-fat curd format. Since I don’t have a choice, I do not bother with it. But, you can definitely give a try!

Adding lemon and a pinch of garam masala or ground cumin would make it even palatable if you hate buttermilk just like that! It will taste somewhat in between a raita and plain curd πŸ™‚

And, moreover, I like curd and do not really care much about fat and other things. Also, I do not put any salt or sugar in the bottle. Its filling as well. And, my headaches have been in control.

fruit juices for summer

Fruit Juices

I have upped my intake of fruits and fruit juices very recently. I prefer citrus or hydrating fruits instead of banana (which is my fav!) or the seasonal mangoes! #DidYouKnow the mangoes increase the body heat?

The advantage with citrus and hydrating fruits is that they have lesser sugar content, more of water content and easy on the stomach as well!! So, gorge on watermelon and berries and mausambis (sweet lime, thanks Nivs :)). And, surprisingly, I am liking watermelon now (I generally hate it!). Oh, I forgot about the other melon varieties – musk melon and family.

No Spices and Heavy Foods
As it is, I eat the food prepared by the cook which is not so homely. So, I avoid eating spices or anything heavy in the entire day. In fact, in summers, my body repulses anything which is excessively fried or any junk.

These days I am the one doing the cooking and as it is I am extremely lazy so I try not to spend much time bothering what to cook and not. And, if you ask Mr. P, he will tell you that in my dishes, you will hardly find salt, lest alone the other spices πŸ˜€

I do avoid fried foods but sometimes I am making nachos for myself only when the weather gets cooler. These days I would say I am binging on hummus. In fact, the new mantra to my cooking is to balance out the protein and carbohydrates so I feel full at the end of the meal.

That makes my stomach very happy. But, this might not be the case with everyone. So, I would just say avoid excess of spices, heavy foods and non-veg as well. Non-vegetarian food increases the body temperature. And, it makes the body dehydrated.

Another mantra when it comes to eating is always eat till you are 3/4th full because eventually after half hour, your stomach will be full to the complete capacity in case any of the food you have had expands.

How is the summer coming on for you? Are you feeling the heat? What are your dietary tips for the season?

Once again, a nice & timely post! Everyone’s busy planning strategies to combat the scorching summer heat! πŸ™‚

In some parts of India, a person leaving for some important task like exams or for travel is offered curd. This is generally considered as an auspicious sign but I think it must also be to keep the person hydrated for that duration of time. Curd definitely keeps thirst away for hours. πŸ™‚

Moreover, curd+ water has another aspect, I think. Water is better used by the body when accompanied by some protein and curd off course is protein. πŸ™‚

Now these two things I mentioned here are MY theories and I don’t actually have any evidence to back these up. However, I have actually tried these and it’s my own experience that I have put up here! πŸ™‚

Ditto on the weather here too. Tonight it drizzled slightly and there is a light breeze which is so welcoming. the summer has been sucking away my energy and enthusiasm. The mucky weather. Have been consciously upping my fluid intake in all forms of juices, sugar cane juice- my fav!, lime juice, butter milk, coconut water and plain water. Just two months back I was dreading summer but it’s actually here and we are right in the middle of it!!! phew

9/10 for this amazing post. Well, I would score a complete 10 if you help me find a solution for my hydration related issue. Kindly, suggest me a way to keep my lips hydrated. As you might require a brief on my water intake to suggest an appropriate solution, here is an approximate account of it. I have a habit of drinking around 2.5 litres of water every day. Yet my lips and throat always feels dry. Kindly suggest a solution. Thank you.
