How to deal with insecurities during Pregnancy? {Women Stuff}

Swathy · July 25, 2013 · 6 Comments

So, today was a good day because I came to know that one of my friend has finally become pregnant. Now, there is a new insecurity in her. She is just 4 weeks along and the heartbeat of the baby has not yet been heard on ultrasound.
Apparently, the heart beat can be heard on an ultrasound at latest by 7 weeks. And, her doc said it would take 5 weeks. Ok, I have no idea why the doc said so and may be she is right and google is wrong!
Anyways, my friend is scared to death about it. She wants the heartbeat like right now! I told her that 5 weeks is too soon for it, probably. I am obviously not well-informed but everyone around said so.
The main issue here is that she is insecure. She has been trying for a baby seriously since like 9-10 months at max. Honestly, I do not think it is too long a time because one year is generally a give and take when you are trying to conceive and she was under hell lot of stress for the past few months.
Two months back there was a significant delay in her periods and she was almost expecting she is carrying. Unfortunately, the reports turned out to be negative.
Moreover, it has been four years to her marriage and everyone around is hankering her for a baby. You know how insensitive people can get, right? We tried our level best to make her feel comfortable but it is something she has to let go.
I think it is a very common thing to get insecure in such a situation. There are so many changes in the physiology that attending to the moods and hormonal changes themselves are too much, leave taking care of office issues and other things at home!
What do you think is the best thing to combat such irrational thoughts? Do they affect the baby? Or, will these things just settle with time and she will get used to it?
PS: I just found out that heart starts beating at 22 days but might not be audible on the ultrasound till 5-6 weeks. Heart Beat is the first viable sign of pregnancy. And, I am keeping my fingers crossed!
PS 2: The images have been taken from google and I do not claim any ownership.

Home Remedies for Hair Fall {Pregnancy}

Swathy · March 14, 2013 · 5 Comments

Hair Fall is one of the very common issues. When I googled about this topic, I found one common suggestion which was to use a shampoo that contains biotin and silica.

Honestly, I don’t have any idea of such shampoo but you might ask a dermatologist or a trichologist. If you can find such a shampoo, do let me also know 🙂 And, coming on to the regular mom’s remedies, let’s check out what my mom suggests.

Warm Ghee
My mom suggests me to apply warm ghee (Indian butter) to reduce hair fall during pregnancy. I think this remedy can also be used when not pregnant. But, remember to use only the pure ghee. And, eat lots of sunflower seeds, walnut and almonds. I never tried this as I can’t bear that stickiness of ghee but my sister had good results using both the things.

Oils and Derivatives
Applying mixture of castor and almond oil does help a lot. Also, coconut milk hair mask was very useful during my pregnancy.

Regular Tips

  • Avoid or minimize the use of hot styling instruments on your hair, such as blow dryers or flat irons.
  • Be calm and happy during pregnancy, its really important coz stress can be the reason for your entire problem during pregnancy.
  • Massage your scalp with warm oil and relax your self.
  • Brush your hair regularly.
Thanks a lot, Punam, for this helpful post. Co check out her blog here 🙂

Infertility and Emotional Health {Women Stuff}

Swathy · November 15, 2012 · 9 Comments

Infertility often creates one of the most distressing life crises that a couple has ever experienced together. The long term inability to conceive a child can evoke significant feelings of loss. I have four friends who are facing this problem and all of them are coping with this problem differently.

The multitude of medical decisions and the uncertainties that infertility brings can create great emotional upheaval for most couples. One of my friends is so depressed because of social and family pressures that she is keeping herself in a cave, metaphorically speaking.
But that’s not a solution to any problem. If she won’t discuss things, probably she won’t realize about the many options available. It is important to keep yourself aware at such a juncture instead of shutting down so that one can find best solution. Who knows there is a light down the tunnel?

Two of my friends are dealing with it very positively. They are not blaming themselves or each other. They take things normally and stay cheerful always. They have actually made their mind that the last thing is always in our hands and that is adoption.
I think that’s perfect because getting pregnant is not the only way to be parents. Really hats off to one of my friend who has gone through five operations and had been to all the best centres but I never saw her crying and her husband is so very supportive.
Everyone has feelings and emotional ups and downs as they pursue infertility treatment. But being negative can always make matters worst. And I have seen women suffer more than men in these situations because of the way we are raised, the beliefs implanted in us.

Okay, let me tell you being a mother can’t be an ultimate ambition in our life. We have so many other things to do. Even women who doesn’t want to be a mother is forced to bear child and is called inhuman or emotionless.
Men are not pressurized that way or probably they are brought up to repress their feelings or keep it to themselves. Because, they must be feeling the same pain but trying to be a strong and chivalrous lest they be taken not that much of man as they are supposed to be.
Well, whatever problems we may have, we should not stop living our life. Don’t keep on postponing your vacation or take your career and relationships for granted. This is something I would totally agree with because I can see some people doing it for some unforeseen future. Its good to be optimistic but that’s of no use if you can’t live your present.

Amazing post, Punam. Its very difficult to put such issues in words if one has never been through it. Oh btw guys, don’t forget to check out Punam’s homemade talcum powder.
