Cardamom for acidity {Health}

Swathy · February 23, 2012 · Leave a Comment

So, a few days back, I did overeating and got a stomach ache. Then, my mom prescribed me this.
Cardamom relieves Acidity
Mom told me that cardamom should be taken when one has acidity. I was out of pudin hara tablets and had nothing else and was in a little painful state. So, this was the only thing available at hand.
Otherwise, as far as I know, cold milk is also great for acidity.
Other Uses of Cardamom
I am not doing a research on cardamom so I shall mention only those uses which have helped me personally.
  • Mountain or Travel Sickness: Has always helped me to an extent when even tablets tend to fail. So, always carry some cardamom and cloves with you on your travels and tours.
  • Stomach Upsets: Apart from acidity, regular stomach indigestion can also get cured by cardamom.
  • Bad Breath: Ok, I never have used this but I know it helps 🙂
  • Dry Cough: Keeping cardamom in the mouth and not swallowing it but letting its essence flow through the throat slowly helps with dry cough and sore throats.
So, what do you use for acidity problems?

Psoriasis and home remedies {Skin Care}

What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a condition which occurs as a result of skin cells being mistaken as external agents by the immune system. Hence, the body starts fighting these cells which result in scaly patches in different colors of the skin. It is actually not a ksin disorder but an immune system fault and the dermatological condition occurs only in some cases.
The skin cells rapidly divide and accumulate and replace themselves on certain parts of the body like scalp, hands, feet, genitals, etc. The skin becomes red and itchy and flaky also. It can affect anyone at any age but it is not communicative.
Please read the wiki page for detailed information.
How to treat Psoriasis?
While I would certainly recommend going to a reliable dermatologist, there are a few things which you can do at home too.
  • Sun Exposure: Expose the affected areas regularly to sun. Sun’s rays are powerful and very necessary for our well-being overall. Yes, they can cause cancer but not going into sunlight has lot worse side effects.
‘Phototherapy’ is a form of treatment which is used to effectively treat psoriasis. This includes exposing the skin to a particular wavelength of the sunlight. That is available only with a dermatologist but one can always use the sunlight for a limited period of time like an hour or so at around 10 AM or 3 PM when the sun’s rays are a little less strong but strong enough.
  • Your Bathing Ritual: Take regular baths, may be once or twice in a day. Add a cup of almond oil to your bath to make it moisturizing. Use a good quality soap which doesn’t strip off the natural oils from the body. It’s good to spend a bit on them. Or, ask your dermatologist to prescribe a gentle cleanser.
  • Moisturize: Moisturizing your skin is a good habit. Either use medicated ointments or go for heavy moisturizers or even vegetable oils. Vaseline or regular Petroleum Jelly also helps a lot with Psoriasis.
  • Diet: A balanced diet is absolutely essential whenever you face any disorder, whether skin or hair or body. So, eat your food properly and make sure you are getting enough healthy fats into your system.
These are somethings you can do along with your medication. But, these are just home remedies which do not guarantee any long term relief or even short term so always seek a doctor’s advice whenever you find any symptoms of psoriasis.

How to deal with a dry skin patch? {Skin Care}

Swathy · January 29, 2012 · 11 Comments

Did you ever suffer from a dry skin patch? I know they are very annoying as I have recently been afflicted of this malady. You might have heard me saying this often that my skin gets extremely dry in winters and due to the lack of proper diet, there was a really horrible dry patch around the mouth. So, I tried some of the things to bring my skin back to normal.
How can your products affect that annoying dry skin patch?
Your products wouldn’t definitely cause a dry skin patch unless they are so harsh and you are not really concentrating on your diet. But, your products can help the dry skin patch to remain just like it is or help a little towards healing it. Do not ever rely on your products to do the entire work but certainly, some expectations should be there. So, do not blame your products if your dry skin patches are not got rid of.
I Exfoliated!!!
Exfoliation is a very important ritual of healing a dry skin patch. It removes the dead skin cells accumulated on the patch and helps reveal the newer skin is which isn’t exactly as dry!!! But, overdoing this can make the patch red and sensitive that it will stop reacting to any treatment. So, its best to use a very gentle scrub and leave it alone for next 2-3 days.What I did? Used sugar body polish on the area (exclude salt from the recipe) once. And, another time, I used Vedic Line Papaya Scrub [review coming soon]. Both worked well.

And, what after exfoliation?
Well, we need to trap the moisture and feed the skin some real nutrients, right? So, I used Almond Oil – Very simple and very effective!!! I dabbed a little of almond oil around my mouth after applying toner and moisturizer for the night. The moisturizer I am currently using is Biotique Wheatgerm Cream which is awesome, btw and really effective [review coming soon] but then, nothing beats oils for me. And, the dry patches went away in a single night. And, my skin is healed as if it wasn’t ever broken. But, it is always best to continue the treatment over a couple of days so I switched back to applying oils on my skin. They give me the Essential Fatty Acids which I am not feeding myself.
