Do you wear low-rise jeans?

Swathy · May 5, 2010 · 4 Comments

This post is for people who have love handles (larger belly) and like to wear low-rise jeans. I would like to point out a very huge disadvantage of wearing low-rise and super low-rise jeans. If you are a skinny person or with a flat waist, these jeans will compliment your figure. But, if you are a person who has a lot of hanging fat around, they sure do not look good on you. But, more than that, they increase your belly fat too.
Many people love to fit into the clothes which are many sizes smaller than their own. But, this practice cab bring a hoard of problems. Our skin is molded according to the clothes we wear. That is the reason we are asked to wear a bra. That gives support to our breasts and prevents it from sagging in an early age. Similarly, if we chose to wear a low-rise jeans, the fat on the abdomen is pushed up and accumulates there making you look even more fat.  And, if you have big butts, you can look really unflattering. And, worse still, if you wear the jeans often enough, the fat at the belly increases by an obnoxious amount because the skin gets accumulated there and your body will take a very weird shape. The problems increase if they are actually too tight for your body to be comfortable. For men, wearing too tight jeans actually cause infertility and damage to the testicles. You can read other implications of tight jeans here.
If next time you are going to buy a pair of jeans, look for those which are comfortable enough to just sit on your body and provide complete flexibility to the legs especially the thighs and buttocks. You can check the comfort level by bending over while trying the jeans. Do not ever buy a pair of jeans without trying. and do not try to fit in the clothes small for your size. You will end up harming your body. Choose a pair of jeans which comfort and flatter you instead of choosing one in which your movements are restricted. For people with big love handles, choose a straight fit jeans which will sit comfortably on your waist and make the belly look flatter than the usual. Choosing what clothes we wear is as much important to our medical concerns as much as to our looks.
A special appeal to mothers: Please encourage comfort sense with clothes among your daughters rather than fashion sense.

Mango – Health and Skin Benefits

Swathy · May 4, 2010 · 23 Comments

The season of “the king of fruits” has come. Have you started eating mango regularly? It is a rich source of vitamin A. And, it is extremely good for skin too. Mango is rich in all vitamins (A, B1, B2, B3, B6, C), minerals, proteins, carbohydrates (including sugar) and fiber. So, why not squeeze a little mango pulp and apply it on your skin for a beautiful smooth feel and to take advantage of all the nutrients in the fruit. Mango is good at getting rid of the blemishes and scars. Since mango is especially rich in Vitamin C, mango pulp is useful to treat pimples and acne.
You can make mango shake. It serves as a great drink which can satisfy your hunger too. It would save you many calories to skip on the sugar and substitute it with honey. You can use the drink as an anti-aging mask too as mango is rich in anti-oxidants. You can even make use of green mangoes (which are not ripe and really rich in Vitamin C) to make ‘Panna’, a traditional Indian drink, which provides enough nutrients for the body to fight sun strokes.
Caution: Please do not think of rubbing the mango peel on your skin. Mango peel contains a toxin named ‘Urushiol’ which can cause allergic reaction in the sensitive skin.

Walking for Weight Loss

Swathy · May 3, 2010 · 3 Comments

In the Lose Weight with simple Habit series, last week we discussed how drinking adequate amount of water can help you to lose weight. Today, I would be talking about another very simple habit which will help your body improve its metabolism and consequently, help in burning the fat more efficiently.
Today’s Habit: Take a 20 minutes walk or stroll daily
Walking is among the most effective form of exercises without over-straining you. And, it is also one of the most effective weight loss exercises you can do. A 20 minute walk daily provides enough of the physical exercise you need to keep your fat burning consistently. Walking improves your metabolism and the amount of oxygen you inhale daily. Oxygen is important for the proper functioning of the organs and more oxygen you inhale, the better would the results be. Improved metabolism helps burn fat more efficiently and helps with easy digestion of the food. If you have ever thought of an exercise which will take care of every part of your body, Walking is your answer. You can walk any time of the day with whatever speed you are comfortable with. You need not do ‘running walk’ to help your body. A peaceful walk at a normal pace is enough to give your body a boost and if you are consistent, you would realize that your pace of walking improves day by day. One thing to remember is to take care of your posture while walking. Keep your back straight and chest stiff. Do not slouch while walking.
Walking in the early morning is a very good way to give your body the fresh oxygen available. The air in the morning is purer than that in the evening. A slow walk in the morning air will awaken all your senses and you will feel your body has rejuvenated. It will keep you energetic all day long and your quality of sleep will improve if you stick to the habit. Do not forget to have a glass or two of water before beginning your walk. If you get bored of walking (which is kind of difficult), try to change your surroundings everyday. Walk along different paths everyday. Ask a friend to accompany you, take a jukebox along with you or observe nature on your walk. You can even plan on your day or take a ‘me time’ during your walk. When you make walking a part of your daily routine with such involvements, it will not feel as work but rather become a habit without which you will not be able to live. So, go ahead and take a walk now and feel the difference.
A tip: A Walk on soft green grass (wet with dew) early in the morning with naked feet. It is an acupuncture therapy and is great for eye sight.
