Myths of Anti-Aging Skin Care

Swathy · February 13, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Hey Guys!! On the eve of Valentine’s Day, I would like to post my next article on anti-aging skin care. I had recently hosted a poll to know what people think about the correct age to start anti-aging skin care. The general consensus goes to the age ranging from 30 to 40. Some think 20-30 might be an ideal time and some even think above 40. I would like to bring to your notice that many people are of the opinion that you grow old when you cross 30 and then, they start taking care of their skin. This is entirely wrong. And, does not help in preserving your skin in a good health. Basically, there is no age limit of starting to take care of your skin. The sooner you start, the better the results and the longevity of the results. And, you would not even need to stick to those anti-aging skin care products displayed on the shelf.
Moreover, some other things which people generally tend to miss. You look aged because of very many reasons apart from how your face looks. Many people tend to forget the skin on their necks, hands, stomach or feet. Each and every part of your body may contribute to your looking older than you think you are. The neck is more exposed to sun and as a result, has a darker skin tone than the rest of your body or even face. Applying sunscreen, face masks and not ignoring neck during the general skin care routine is very important to preserve your neck in a good shape. Again, do not forget your hands and arms. You need not apply masks to your arms but a regular exfoliation will help to keep them soft. They get more tired and worn out as we do our maximum work with our hands. Same is the case with our feet. They carry our burden everywhere. We, too, need to show them some care in return. Apart from this, if you are overweight, your belly is huge, your thighs are flabby, your breasts are hanging down or you have thin hair; you sure do look more old than you are. So, never forget 4 commandments of good health:
  • Good Sleep
  • Intense exercise
  • Proper nutrition
  • Lots of water
 They would keep you in shape and improve your vitality and confidence. And, take care of yourself by applying sunscreen daily on all the exposed parts of the body. And, do not forget to reapply frequently. Generally, everything you do in your day has a long term effect on your body. So, think about what you are doing and what effect will it have on your body and ultimately, your looks. Stay away from stress. Join some yoga or art of living classes. It would contribute to mental piece. Control your anger. It brings your blood to a boil.
Coming back to the topic of proper age to start with anti-aging skin care depends on your skin type and routine. If you know that you spend a lot of time in sun, start with protecting your self with sunscreen. Do not forget your children. Teach them early so they lead better lives. Every skin has a different reaction to sun. So, one can never generically say this is the right age to start on these products. And, you would not need any such products if you start on your skin care early. So, take care of your and your kid’s skin from today and follow it as a routine day in day out. That would delay aging.

Sunscreen: Role in anti-aging Skin Care {Sunscreen}

Swathy · January 23, 2010 · 16 Comments

Aging is the biggest worry of everyone. No one really wants to be old. Even, I dread my birthdays though I wait for them whole year. I remember how I felt when I turned 18 and then, at 20 and now, I will be hitting 24. The clocks and years seem to be running. But, yes, you can turn the years back. Follow the tips I am going to talk about today and see the results for yourself in a month.
Sunscreen
No one can ever stop talking about its benefits for your skin. Sun is the biggest enemy of our skin. The hypes UVA and UVB are for real and their effects can range from simple skin disorders to skin cancer. So, do not take sun for granted. Apply sunscreen religiously and reapply after every 2 hours. Try to stay away from sun between 10 and 4. The rays are the strongest and at their worst.
If you are outside, stand in shade, put on a hat, cover yourself completely. Do not worry if you look like thief or a militant. Its really important. In any case you are concerned about being a fashion disaster, you can buy wide-brimmed stylish hats or learn to tie scarves in an elegant manner. And, wear well-fitting full-sleeved T-shirts or tops. They look elegant.
If at home, do not close windows and doors to stop the sunlight. Allow your house to be filled with as much natural light as possible. It is good for your health and very hygienic. The sunlight cleans our surroundings. But, remember that UVA comes theough windows also. So, never forget to wear a sunscreen while at home too.
Use a high-factor sunscreen like 30SPF. It is ideal for Indian climate. High-sunscreen factor gives you a better protection for a longer time. But, no matter what, you have to apply it after every 2 hours.
Speaking of sunscreen, there is a very important thing which has never been emphasized. Many people are sensitive to light and they do not  even realize it. They get certain skin disorders which are never diagnosed correctly. Recently, I went down with a skin disorder and consulted a dermatologist. She said that I am sensitive to light and am supposed to protect my skin from the light emanating from the tube lights and floroscent bulbs too. They also emit radiations which are harmful for our body. So, either switch to filament bulbs or cover your skin well under the lights. Do not let the direct light strike your skin. You can sit behind a curtain or some covering. And, sleep with your lights switched off.
Type of Sunscreens
Sunscreens are either physical or chemical.
Chemical Sunscreens are ones which you are supposed to apply 30 minutes  prior to going under the sun. They create a film on the skin and prevent the absorption of sun’s rays into the body. So, they have to be applied a little prior to sun exposure and they should be applied as close to the body as possible. It is often best that only sunscreen is applied on the face. They have many compounds like Avobenzone, Benzophenone, Oxybenzone and many more.  These compounds get absorbed into the skin easily and affect the body internally. Read this article to know more about it.
Physical Sunscreens provide physical protection to the body. Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide are the compounds found in physical sunscreens. They can be applied just as moisturizers and you can immediately go in the sun. They do not have the dangers involved in chemical sunscreens. But, beware of the nano particles of titanium dioxide used in the products. They enter the blood stream and create havoc in the body. It is extremely toxic.
But, unfortunately, there is no natural sunscreen which can provide resistance from both UVA and UVB as effectively as the commercial sunscreens. Thus, my advise would be that you can buy a sunscreen whose key ingredient is zinc oxide. It would be the safest bet.

Foods you can eat to improve your body resistance to sun’s rays

And, eat lot of tomatoes and spinach. Both of them have capacity to increase the body resistance against sun’s rays. Do not forget other green leafy vegetables which also provide resistance against the sun. Increase your resistance internally and externally to sun.

Green Tea Beauty Uses {DIY}

Swathy · December 15, 2009 · 7 Comments

We all are, by now, aware of the benefits of drinking Green Tea everyday thanks to the marketing of its benefits done so aggressively by everyone from cosmetics to health care professionals.

It can provide you with abundant anti-oxidants to slow down your aging process. You can cut down your calories by not adding any sugar or honey to your tea but it depends on your taste, of course. Not everyone can drink it. Anyways, I am not here to tell you how to drink your cup of tea or tell you about its benefits. I know that you all are more than saturated with all that information.

You all must have heard about the growing use of green tea extracts in the cosmetic industry. Well, instead of spending large bucks on buying such products which contain less than 10% of the green tea extract as its ingredient and mixed with all sorts of chemicals, you can use your own freshly brewed green tea for the same effects at home and save your bucks simultaneously. You can use green tea as a rinse for your hair, wash your face with it, use it as a toner, in the body scrub and for those people who like making their own moisturizers and all, you can use green tea instead of simple distilled water to provide you with extra benefits. After drinking your cup of tea, you can use the left over tea leaves to brew another cup. You might want it to be a little concentrated so use less water and let it sit for at least 15 minutes. After straining, put the brew in the fridge for half hour. When chilled, you can use it the way you want to. You can also relax your eyes by placing cotton balls saturated with green tea on your eyes.
If you do not drink green tea then you can buy the supplements available at drug stores. Enjoy your cup of tea and the health and skin benefits that come with it.
